    Monk Festival or Monkey Business?

    Meredith Monk: Dolmen Music (1981)
    Classical | EAC (APE & CUE) | ECM | 1 CD / 3 parts / 216 MB

Monk brings calm to an experimental field better known for its violent extremes, a gentleness that prods the imagination without overtaxing it. Her repertory of sounds no longer startles, but we can still enjoy the elegance. Her use of harmony soothes. The rhythmic disruptions and the minimalist overlays of repetition go far enough to interest the ear, but not much further. In the singing, playing, head movements and dance steps we experience the impish nature and fresh thoughts of a well-behaved child – a simplicity borne of choice and the demarcation of one's limitations that break the theatrics of tradition.
