The moody, urgent throb of Jim, the opening track on Jean-Louis Murat's Mustango, is a good example of the typical quality of Murat's work. Using the beautiful voice of Lovage & Elysian Fields vocalist Jennifer Charles and the incredible guitar work of Tom Waits collaborator Marc Ribot, and, of course!, the whole Calexico line-up on the entire album!, this is a wonderful effort that brings to mind the early work of Leonard Cohen with a bighter/folkier touch. Each song is a brooding treasure, filled with lush arrangements and subtle playing that perfectly complement his material. Fans of this type of dark moody pop should give this a careful listen; there are some excellent performances and the language barrier doesn't make a difference. No doubt this is Murat's finest work, the harmnony, the excellence could only been achieved with such an awesome list of collaborators.
