Classical / Modern Classical / 20th Century / Harp

Simeon ten Holt worked out this composition over several years. The harp brings forth a more transparent, more diffuse timbre than the piano, a singing tone-space. Simeon ten Holt (1923-2012), one of the Netherlands' preeminent minimalists, is best known for Canto Ostinato, for one or more keyboards. The piece is modular, with 106 sections, each of which can be repeated an infinite number of times, left to the performers' discretion. The composer estimates that the minimum length of time required for the piece to make the appropriate impact is about 30 minutes. The score is arranged so that there is enough material for at least four players, and in its most popular configuration, it's played by four pianos. When a single player tackles it, though, he/she is given the choice of playing any of the lines, so there is room for considerable variation between performances in which material gets highlighted. In this recording, Assia Cunego plays the work on solo harp.

By wisely limiting her performance to about 70 minutes, the sound of the harp never wears out its welcome. (The recordings of the four-piano version are at least twice as long, but with four instruments, there is an opportunity for timbral variety that justifies that length.) Because of the nature of the instrument, this version has a delicacy and transparency that reveal a different character of the piece than the heavily percussive original for piano. Anyone who loves the work (and it does have a cadre of ardent devotees) should revel in the new insights that are exposed in this gossamer interpretation. One fascinating thing about this recording is the clarity with which Cunego brings out Holt's reference to the passacaglia in Monteverdi's madrigal Lamento della Ninfa. Its repeating bass line and harmonic progression are identical to what Holt introduces beginning at about section 23 of the piece. It's a common chord progression that many composers have used, but Holt actually quotes fragments of Monteverdi's melody, and it's unlikely that he would have unconsciously appropriated such a well-known piece. His homage to the Baroque master tends to get buried under the layers of figuration in the four-piano version, but in Cunego's performance it emerges with sparkling boldness, and even allows the listener to hear the archaic form of the passacaglia as a kind of proto-minimalism. Throughout, by highlighting the work's most melodic qualities, she gives the work an accessibility that might win it new converts. The sound is clean and open.
