Steel Mill Green Eyed God 1971

Steel Mill - Green Eyed God (1971)
Heavy Prog | MP3 320kbps | 165MB

Nobody seems to know much about this band, so I looked for it in user lists on Amazon. It shows up on only two (that I could see): the first one includes the likes of Van Der Graaf Generator, Renaissance, Pink Floyd, Web, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Nektar and Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come. The other list has such delights as Quintessence, Hawkwind, Amon Duul II, Rare Bird, Pink Fairies, High Tide and Gong. So, do Steel Mill sound like any of these? Not really… although I have heard some people compare them to Black Widow and Stray (I am unfamiliar with either of these so can't comment). I would say their sound is heavy prog; the basic sound of guitar/bass/drums sounds a touch like Black Sabbath (possibly thanks to the production values of the day), although the structure of the songs is more prog. The singer has a soulful voice, and there's plenty of keyboards and flute in there too - prompting Jethro Tull comparisons from some quarters. At one point the band sound like Hendrix, at others they stray close to the Pentangle way of doing things. As far as I know, this was Steel Mill's only record. If you look for them on Wikipedia you get a write-up on Bruce Springsteen's band (I've learned something today then!) - not these chaps! Fluff Freeman described them as having a mighty sound. Sean Trane, Prog-Folk Specialist on Prog Archives gave the album 5/5, calling it "an almost flawless album" - but don't take their word for it… listen for yourself!
