VA - The Full Monty: Music From The Motion Picture Soundtrack (1997)

Six unemployed men, inspired by a touring group of male strippers, decide they can make a small fortune by putting on a striptease show of their own-but with one small difference.

They intend to go the "full monty" and strip completely naked! In this hilarious, heartfelt comedy, these six friends discover the inner strength to bare it all in front of the world. This "enchantingly funny crowd-pleasing" comedy (David Ansen, Newsweek) features the music of Donna Summer, Gary Glitter, Sister Sledge and Tom Jones.

With the emphasis on retro-'70s kitsch, the soundtrack to THE FULL MONTY offers up a plate of chestnuts that will bring a sense of deja vu to listeners who grew up with '70s AM radio. There's the quirky, irresistibly funky Hot Chocolate tune "You Sexy Thing," Donna Summer's lascivious "Hot Stuff," the Sister Sledge anthem "We Are Family." For that postmodern touch, there's Tom Jones covering Randy Newman (presumably via Joe Cocker) on "You Can Leave Your Hat On," which fits nicely with the libidinous theme of the rest of the material.

Critically, commercially and artistically, director Peter Cattaneo's clever meditation on the male ego, disguised as a risqué strip-club comedy, was one of 1997's most gratifying films. With a soundtrack of mid-1970s to more recent vintage pop (including Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing", Tom Jones's bawdy take on Randy Newman's "You Can Leave Your Hat On", Wilson Pickett's raucous "Land of 1,000 Dances", Irene Cara's "Flashdance–What a Feeling") and scoring by Art of Noise alum Anne Dudley, The Full Monty holds its own as a thematic album. And yes, the album also includes a version of Davidmore… Rose's classic "The Stripper".
