Reviews

I think his Debussy etudes are inconsistent, but the best of them are extremely interesting; such as #8, which was conveniently posted to Youtube here (fast-forward to 2:05).* At the start of #8 as in several of his Debussy Images, he takes a much slower tempo than pianists usually do – he's extremely good with slow tempi, and on the whole when he goes to an exaggeratedly slow tempo he's even more effective than Richter is at the same thing. There also turns out to be a very good reason for the tempo choice. The effect is mesmerizing.
Vedernikov does a great job of differentiating and getting the most out of the astonishingly numerous and varied kinds of material Debussy juxtaposes here. I never understood how really extraordinary this etude was until I heard AV's performance. The Denon CD issue btw sounds better than this Youtube post, which appears to be from an LP.
