Disc Vol.1 reviews David Hurwitz "CLASSICSTODAY"
We badly need a complete set of Zelenka’s orchestra works, as Arkiv’s edition has long vanished into the remainder bins, and this one (previously issued as three separate CDs) fits the bill nicely. Although the players use “authentic instruments”, their sound is comparatively warm and gentle, though this doesn’t mean that they don’t handle with aplomb the insanely virtuosic horn parts in the Capriccios, or the bubbling wind writing in the Concerto. The inclusion of the overture from Melodrama de S. Wenceslao makes an interesting bonus, with its fascinating opposition of simultaneous duple and triple rhythms. Jan Zelenka’s quirky, entertaining, and appallingly virtuosic orchestral pieces have received comparatively little attention from record companies. His entire output for the medium fits onto three CDs, and there has only been one complete set recorded: by Camerata Bern for Archiv, now out of print, like so much of the Universal (formerly Polygram) domestic catalog. That makes this ongoing cycle of Zelenka’s orchestral works all the more important, and fortunately the performances are excellent, as they were in Volume One. Das Neu-Eröffnete Orchestre is a period instrument band that doesn’t sound like a period instrument band, if by this we mean scrappy, thin, and acerbic. They play this music with warmth, affection, and with an ease that makes light of such difficulties as the composer’s atrociously stratospheric horn writing. All three works on this disc essentially fall into the Baroque suite pattern: an introduction followed by a group of dances or character pieces–and every one of them is a gem. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians cites Zelenka as one of the very few Baroque composers who could create “consistently fresh tonal imagery,” meaning simply that his acute harmonic sense, complex rhythms, and brilliant use of instrumental color constantly tease the ear. Yes, it’s true: he’s an ear tease! Disc Vol.3 reviews David Hurwitz "CLASSICSTODAY"
This disc completes Jürgen Sonnentheil’s excellent survey of Zelenka’s complete orchestral works. The highlight is a stunning rendition of Capriccio IV, capped by some pretty amazing playing of its insanely high horn parts. The work has all the melodic, harmonic, and textural interest that makes this composer one of the most characterful voices of the Baroque era. The Ouverture a 7 Concertanti doesn’t sport the same colorful array of instruments as the Capriccio, but the music has personality in abundance, especially the delicious concluding Folie. Sonnentheil also offers a special treat in the form of the overture to Zelenka’s Melodrama de S. Wenceslao (complete recording due in 2001 from Supraphon). Typically, it features some remarkably independent writing (given the period) for two trumpets and timpani. Throughout this series, the playing of Das Neu-Eröffnete Orchestre on period instruments has combined vitality with both warmth and elegance, a far cry from the steely cold sound of many UK period instrument bands.
