A unique recital on record of complementary bagatelles and sonatas from two distinct periods in Beethoven's life, in a new recording by a modern master pianist.Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy is 'a storyteller', remarked Jeremy Nicholas in his Gramophone review of the Chopin sonatas on Piano Classics. He went on to praise 'nigh-on ideal' playing in the Second Sonata: 'unforced, rhythmically buoyant [and] texturally translucent'. The German pianist now illuminates four works of Beethoven with the same qualities.

Rising at the end of the 20th Century, SOUNDGARDEN were loud, heavy, genuine, and unaffected by whatever was cool. Their mix of weighty power, soaring melodies and punk sneer made them ideal standard bearers for the grunge movement, but their towering musicianship and intelligent songcraft helped them transcend the era and remain iconic far beyond their origins in the Seattle scene. In recent years Upupyāma have been cultivating a fast-growing following for their organic psychedelic daydreams, blending an ever-evolving mix of influences that draws in everything from pastoral '70s krautrock, acid folk and heavy prog-psych wig-outs, by way of Anatolian rock, Thai disco, library music, Bhutanese traditional and an array of other global rhythms. Grandiose is Devin Daniels' sophomore release with The Village. Composed entirely of original tunes, Grandiose showcases the talents of Devin as well as a crew of young west coast all-stars: Logan Kane on bass, Myles Martin on drums, and Javier Santiago on keys. Logan was present on Devin's first excursion with The Village, Trio Expeditions. Myles is a frequent collaborator and a staple in premiere LA rhythm sections. Javier and Devin met while attending the Herbie Hancock Institute at UCLA.

Harmonic Divergence is the perfect companion piece to Steven Wilson’s highly acclaimed 2023 album The Harmony Codex. On this very limited nine track release, music from the original album has been remixed and reimagined by Wilson, alongside longtime bandmates/collaborators and like-minded bands and producers. The result is a warped mirror image of the original, where oblique electronics are replaced by spidery gothic guitar riffs and cyclical piano tracks are mutated and transformed for the dance floor.

There are voices that speak, others that sing, and then there are those rare voices that listen—to the world, to its wounds, to the fragile beauty of humanity. Fabrizio De André was one of these rare voices.

Unfolding is Jessica Moss’ most meditative and plaintive solo album, and perhaps the first in the Montréal violinist/composer’s decade-spanning discography that might properly be called ambient. The ex-Silver Mt Zion and Black Ox Orkestar member draws from post-classical, drone, minimalism, industrial/metal, power electronics, Klezmer and other folkways. This is not abstract ambient music; layers of violin melody, electroacoustic processing, intermittent voice, and percussion from The Necks drummer Tony Buck, bring forth deeply emotive genre-defying compositions guided by a spirit of searching and summoning that unfold in a prevailing atmosphere of incantation and mournful restraint.

The Lumineers’ co-founder, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jeremiah Fraites and ambient musician and sound artist Taylor Deupree have teamed up and release today Northern (Redux). Out via Dualtone Records/Mercury KX, Northern (Redux) is a complete reimagining of Deupree’s acclaimed 2006 album featuring new piano contributions written and recorded by Fraites along with renewed versions of the original tracks composed by Deupree. The result is a hypnotic, majestic album filled with sweeping atmospheric melodies and rich, transformative soundscapes.

In keeping with previous Lennon box sets, the ‘Evolution’ mixes of New York City track the development of each of its nine songs using demos, rehearsals, snatches of dialogue, and early takes. It’s a thrill to hear these songs take shape and to hear an unguarded and uncompromising Lennon lead the sessions. “I know we’re gonna end up with that clean, clean recorded sound which I hate,” he frets before tearing into a ferocious version of the title track. We hear ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ transform from an eerie home demo to a rollicking boogie, with some choice Lennon witticisms along the way – “Of course, anyone daft enough to decide to play saxophone deserves torturing” and, when attempting to chivy things on, “C’mon, I want to get on to that female lib song before McCartney gets on to that!”. Meanwhile, the studio sessions for ‘Luck Of The Irish’ show Lennon’s softer side as he coaches Ono through her vocal.

Taken from Lars’ personal collection of soundboard tapes, this unreleased concert recording finds us in Dublin about halfway through the European run of the Poor Touring Me tour. (Recording note: there is static after Enter Sandman and during the “Post-Accident Jam.” This is because of the stage destruction portion of the show.)

JUDY GARLAND: LIVE AT THE CURRAN THEATRE, SAN FRANCISCO, CLOSING NIGHT, JUNE 22, 1952 This release of the final night of the 1952 Curran Theatre run of shows (May 26-June 22, 1952) is based on a new high-resolution restoration of a set of transcription discs fortuitously found in pristine condition, digitized with the best choice of stylus and carefully pitch-corrected. This show was undoubtedly originally recorded on tape, from which several sets of discs were then cut, including the source discs used here. Added to it is a selection of radio recordings from 1942-46, inclusive, from disc sources in fine condition, and as a bonus, a brief live recording of Garland’s spoof of Marlene Dietrich’s singing. Garland’s portion of this vaudeville show is presented complete, including all dialogue and audience interaction between musical selections.
