Angela Hewitt - Emmanuel Chabrier: Piano Music (2006)

Chabrier’s name lives on primarily through España and Marche joyeuse. His tiny output for piano is far too rarely encountered in the concert hall or on recordings, yet he is a delightful, self-contained original. From his total of a mere 26 titles, Angela Hewitt plays 18 on this little gem of a disc.

As it happened, I listened first to Habanera (track 17), one of my favourites, a languid, sensuous dance, and was struck by the unusual acoustic. It sounds as though the piano was recorded in some deserted fin de siècle spa hotel – and so it proves, for Hewitt’s richly coloured Fazioli was captured in ‘Das Kulturzentrum Grand Hotel, Dobbiaco, Italy’, conjuring up images of cobwebbed spa patients shuffling vacantly round the dance floor before their next treatment.

In fact, whenever there is an exposed soft passage in the upper treble in this programme, the same atmospheric effect engages the ear momentarily; in the more robust items, it is hardly noticeable. As a piano recording, it is far preferable to Pierre Barbizet’s dry and close-miked 1982 Chabrier collection (Erato – nla), but his discs feature the complete works.

As to Hewitt’s performances, they are as affectionate, warm, lyrical and charming as one could wish, underlining but not exaggerating Chabrier’s deliciously predictable unpredictability. Though a tad slower than Barbizet in the two virtuoso numbers, Scherzo-valse and Bourrée fantasque (what splendid encores they would make), Hewitt’s sparkling playfulness somehow makes them sound more vivacious.

Review by Jeremy Nicholas, Gramophone Magazine

Anyone with a passing awareness of her wonderful recordings for Hyperion knows that Angela Hewitt is one of the world's leading interpreters of Bach, and that she's no slouch in recording works by Chopin, Couperin, Messiaen, and Ravel, either. Add to this distinguished roster the name of Emmanuel Chabrier, whose keyboard works Hewitt recorded in 2004, and rendered with as much technical polish and expressive depth as anyone could lavish on them. Whether or not such light and sometimes inconsequential piano music deserves special treatment, Hewitt is unstinting in her musicality, and she delivers colorful, idiomatic readings of these late nineteenth century miniatures that arguably make them sound better than they really are. All will agree that Hewitt's sensitivity and skill are beyond dispute and that this program is an excellent showcase for her astonishing abilities; it is only secondarily of interest because of Chabrier's music, which tends toward mildly picturesque vignettes at best and shallow parlor novelties at worst. In the former category are the late pieces, Aubade (1883), Habanera (1885), and Bourrée fantasque (1891), which exude sophistication and dry wit, and seem slightly ahead of their time; also worth hearing for their charming modern qualities are the posthumously published Ballabile, Caprice, and Feuillet d'album (all 1897). Something of a mixed bag is Dix pièces pittoresques (1881), which are character sketches and dances in a pretty salon style, but most are melodically trite, harmonically predictable, and emotionally superficial. The earliest works offered, the Impromptu (1873) and the Ronde champêtre (ca. 1870), are less compelling, except perhaps for a few eccentric harmonies and rhythms that vaguely anticipate Ravel; little else recommends them except their period color. So fans of Angela Hewitt will rejoice that she performs here with her usual brilliance and panache, but they may feel a little less jubilant about her choice of repertoire this time out. Hyperion's recording, however, is sublime in every way.

Review by Blair Sanderson, Allmusic.com

Emmanuel Chabrier's piano music has everything going for it: charm, wit, imagination, unexpected harmonic twists, and more than a few technical challenges. So why do pianists habitually ignore it? Hopefully Angela Hewitt's freshly minted, sharply honed interpretations will inspire recitalists to dust off these unsung treasures. Her keen ear for detail always arises from the music's character and never draws attention to itself. The Schumann-esque Ronde champêtre boasts remarkable rhythmic spring, while Bourrée fantasque's busy contrapuntal lines resonate with the clarity of Hewitt's best Bach playing, yet without sacrificing one iota of scintillation. There have been lighter, crisper renditions of the (relatively) well-known Scherzo-valse, but Hewitt's telling left-hand inflections keep things airborne. In fact, the nine other Pièces pittoresques benefit from Hewitt's ability to give each one its own timbral voice. On paper, for example, Mauresque's steady accompanimental chords don't look like anything special. However, in Hewitt's hands they come to animated life. The recording quality is slightly too resonant for my taste–perhaps a more lustrous SACD transfer looms on the horizon, and more French music from Angela Hewitt.
