Of all Bach's works the secular cantatas certainly had the most checkered fate. After the composer's death they fell into oblivion, and then were discovered a few years after the church cantatas. Bach's first biographer, Forkel, knew only the "Peasant Cantata". Albert Schweitzer suspected the existence of about twenty cantatas of this kind. According to the most recent research, Bach wrote over forty. For a long time the secular cantatas were regarded as minor works music written for special occasions, but there are numerous indications that prove that Bach accorded them the same importance as his other works. He remained faithful to the genre throughout his career.
The Wedding Cantatas constitute a group that is quite distinct from the compositions written for civic ceremonies, school festivities in Leipzig, or important gatherings of wealthy bourgeois families. We know four works written for weddings. The two that have survived intact -chronologically the first and the last- appear on this record. The Cantata BWV 202 probably dates from the Cothen period, and BWV 210 from the last decade of his life. Both of them are for solo soprano and strings with the addition of a few wind instruments. (Of the other two cantatas we possess only the words of the one and the vocal parts of the other).
Bach undoubtedly composed more than four wedding cantatas; the loss of the others can be explained by the specific nature of this type of composition: in most cases it would have been performed only once; moreover, according to custom, the young couple were presented with the score. Thus their preservation and survival were more uncertain than was the case in the religious music which was performed at least once a year.
