A trim, at times, almost balletic Falstaff. If that seems a ludicrous contradiction, I should explain that it refers to Dutoit's spirited interpretation of the work, not the central character, though Falstaff himself has shed a few pounds in the process but is no less loveable. Indeed, Dutoit's swift tempo for the second section (at the Boar's Head) has the theme for Falstaff's 'cheerful look and pleasing eye' sounding less like Tovey's understandable misunderstanding of it as ''blown up like a bladder with sighing and grief''. The trimming down process is abetted by the Montreal sound, with lean, agile strings and incisive brass (the horns are magnificent). Some may feel a lack of warmth in the characterization. I certainly felt that the first presentation of Prince Harry's theme (0'40'') could have done with a richer string sonority. Doubtless, too, there will be collectors who, at moments, miss the generous humanity of Barbirolli (mid-price EMI), or the Straussian brilliance of Solti (mid-price Decca—and whose reading Dutoit's most closely resembles). And although Mackerras (full-price EMI) is wonderful in the dream interludes and Falstaff's death, the start of his fourth section, with Falstaff's rush to London only to be rejected by the new King, is short on teeming excitement and anticipation.

Apart from a tiny mistake in the flute solo at 5'40'' in track 17, the Montreal orchestra provides us with arguably the best Falstaff we have yet had on record. More importantly I have not heard a Falstaff since Elgar's own (a reissue soon please, EMI) that is both so compellingly vital as drama and experienced in a single sweep as a symphonic whole. This is the kind of performance that makes you realize why Elgar felt this to be his best work and why Oliver Knussen recently referred to it as Elgar's finest symphony.

With the Enigma Variations Dutoit is on more competitive ground. It's an admirably straightforward, forward-moving and confident account, again superbly played, though it offers few special insights. Some of the score's gentler wonders are attended to rather casually: the solo cello in Winifred Norbury's Variation, the Eighth, (at 0'46''); the lack of a true ppp at the start of ''Nimrod''. There isn't the humour that Barbirolli and Mackerras bring to R. B. T.'s amateur theatricals of Var. No. 3 either, or the poetic imagination and acute observation that abound in Slatkin's perhaps overly melancholy but uncreasingly rewarding RCA account.

Lest all these caveats would seem to add up to a resounding thumbs down, I should add that Dutoit's Enigma Variations would certainly bring an audience to its feet in concert. And such is the range of the recording that the bass drum and organ in the finale are more than likely to bring the neighbours hotfoot and homicidal to your front door.'

Review by John Steane, Gramophone

I bought this inexpensive CD to listen to what I had hoped to be a fresh, rather lean, "Falstaff", having read quite a positive review written around the time that this Decca CD was released in 1991. I'm pleased to say that I was not disappointed and feel that this disc, which probably got rather overlooked back in the days of the classical CD rush twenty-odd years ago, is well-worth having in your collection, particularly for the "Falstaff" Symphonic Study.

Charles Dutoit was with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal for many years, ending in 2002, and both conductor and orchestra made quite a lot of records over those years, including excellent Debussy and Ravel. We need to remember that these composers were contemporaries of Elgar and I think Dutoit reminds us that "Falstaff" was written in 1913, not in the nineteenth century, by adopting an almost Mahlerian sweep to the work. This, I find, is most effective.

The "Enigma" variations are fine, too, and the whole CD is complimentary to the classic Adrian Boult recording Overture in D Minor, Cello Concerto, Falstaff (Boult) and more recent Andrew Davis Falstaff (Davis and Bbcso), both of which are highly regarded.

The (anonymous) Decca recording team in 1990 captured a performance giving us wide dynamics and super bass, if high-fidelity is your thing.

Recommended!
