The Geneva Tapes were the lost audio recordings of a band formed by a pre-Yes Patrick Moraz and cellist Jean Ristori called Integral Aim. It's singer and co-songwriter, David Kubinec, later renamed the band Mainhorse Airline. Now recovered and remastered on this CD, the tapes provide a glimpse into the very early years of experimental, progressive rock.
Built essentially on a foundation of heavy, bluesy rock, the songs are mixed with jazz, classical, and psychedelia. Technical virtuosity abounds, particularly with Moraz's keyboarding and Bryson Graham's fast and frenzied drumming. But the thread that ties it all together is the expressive and charismatic David Kubinec, whose musical narration of the lyrics (compelling and evocative by themselves) tugs you along the harrowing flight path of a heroin trip.
The CD's overall sound is exciting and raw, as if recorded live at an underground club. After Kubinec's departure, Moraz and Ristori went on to reform the band as Mainhorse, which recorded a more polished collection of some of these songs, along with some lyrical changes, but lacked the "buzz" found in the original recordings.
The Geneva Tapes by David Kubinec's Mainhorse Airline is a must have for not only prog fans but all music-philes and music history buffs. Great stuff and highly recommended! ~ Review By LeastLikely
