This disc, originally recorded in 1997, has been issued in various forms; the current Arie Antiche (Antique Arias) title is better than the British release that bestowed upon the program the wimpy title of Dmitri Hvorostovsky Sings Classical Arias. Most of the arias are Baroque, not Classical, and a few come from early in the Baroque era territory on which few mainstream operatic vocalists have dared to tread. The results for the hot Russian baritone (his profile, curiously, appears in reverse of the photo on the original album cover) are mixed, but there's nothing to interfere with the enjoyment of fans who like his voice in general and there are a lot of them. Hvorostovsky seems to have flirted only lightly with Baroque vocal technique, and several showpiece arias like Carissimi's "Vittoria, mio core" (track 1) come off sounding oddly like Verdian marches with a Russian accent. Things pick up in the more lyrical numbers, however. The combination of Gluck and Hvorostovsky is not one that would naturally come to mind, but his "Che farò senza Euridice" from Orfeo ed Euridice is genuinely affecting. Hvorostovsky, or his handlers, devoted some effort to choosing material that would fit his voice, and the listener reaps the dividends: the Alessandro Stradella sacred aria "Pietà, Signore" is not an everyday item but makes a glorious conclusion, and works by Caldara and Cesti are nicely integrated with those of Handel and Alessandro Scarlatti. Not all of the material was originally written for low voice; Hvorostovsky is comfortable in the arrangements, many of which are his own. Perhaps the highlight of the whole program is a mysterious little anonymous song called "Nina," just over two minutes long. Sample track 15, and you may just decide the entire album is worth having for that moment of pure sweetness. The booklet notes for this reissue are minimal; no texts, original or otherwise, are included. Hvorostovsky did not achieve the triumph here that Renée Fleming would with her album of Handel arias several years later, but this is an unusual item in his catalog for those who missed its earlier incarnations.
