With this two-disc set, Friedhelm Flamme brings us Volume 13 in his impressive and valuable coverage of the work of the North German baroque organ masters. Here he turns his attention to the complete organ works of Michael Praetorius of Wolfenbüttel. Praetorius is well known to many early-music lovers for his delightful dance music arrangements from "Terpsichore"; but in fact he was also a choral and organ composer of the very first rank, as well as contributing invaluable theoretical and practical material to our knowledge of music history in his writings.
The present set brings us all of his extant organ works, namely the Lutheran chorale fantasias from "Musae Sioniae" and the Latin hymn settings of "Hymnodia Sionia", here played on the splendidly restored Christoph Treutmann organ of 1737 in the Klosterkirche at Grauhof near Goslar. Praetorius' settings of the Lutheran chorales are simply magnificent - early but well-developed and beautiful examples of the great German tradition of the organ chorale variation, fantasia and partita as subsequently represented in the works of composers such as Scheidemann, Weckmann, Buxtehude, Böhm and Bach. The first three works are of the chorale fantasia type - "Christ, unser Herr, zum Jordan kam", "Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott", and "Wir glauben all an einen Gott" - each one both brilliant and majestic, and culminating in a magnificent peroration. They're played by Flamme with great style and energy, and enhanced by colourful registrations.
The following chorale piece, the oft-recorded "Nun lob, mein Seel, den Herren", adopts a more traditional variation procedure. It too is a wonderful piece, ending with a chaconne-like passage of miraculously ornamented variations on the last line of the chorale, and it receives a sonorous, majestic performance from Flamme. There follow a number of shorter Latin hymn settings, and then a remarkable curiosity - the only existing work by Hieronymus Praetorius III, son of Jacob of the somewhat numerous Praetorius dynasty of Hamburg and unrelated to Michael. This poor fellow died at the age of 15, leaving us this single work in the form of a Magnificat setting which holds the attention by its variety and beauty; you'd certainly never guess, if it were not for Gerhard Aumüller's excellent booklet notes, that it was composed by a schoolkid, and altogether it's a remarkable and fascinating achievement which Flamme plays here with conviction and affection.
Continuing in the spirit of the series, CD2 brings us works from a variety of little-known composers, contemporary with and subsequent to Michael Praetorius. Some are more interesting than others, but I especially enjoyed David Abel's first Praeludium in d (track 1); the two works by Johann Bahr (3, 4); Wilhelm Karges' setting of "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß" (10); the Praeambulum pedaliter by Petrus Hasse I, ancestor of the late-baroque Johann Adolf Hasse (11), another Praeambulum by Jakob Bölsche (14), and the series of works by the marginally better-known Andreas Werckmeister (15-17), many of these further enhanced here by adventurous registrations.
