Galina Gorchakova - Italian Opera Arias (2001)

The great Russian bear has disgorged another magnificent voice. To encounter Galina Gorchakova for the first time, as I did, in the intimate surroundings of Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall was a hair-raising experience nobody would be likely to forget. Her blazing soprano has conquered audiences in the opera-house and, though the recordings which followed – such as Mazeppa (DG, 1/94) and Prince Igor (Philips, 4/95) – have sometimes raised doubts, they are not enough to obscure the essential message: Gorchakova promises to be one of the vocal giants of her generation.
This recital programme marks her first steps into the Italian repertoire on disc. For a star of the Kirov, Verdi’s St Petersburg opera – La forza del destino – makes an apt choice. Arriving at the monastery gate, her Leonora immediately announces herself as a Verdi soprano of tragic stature, shaping “Madre, pietosa Vergine” with the dark colouring of a troubled soul. Her opening cry of “Pace” in Leonora’s Act 4 solo is impressive too, although she encounters a problem later with the floated B flat at “Invan la pace”, which comes out at full volume and is followed by a couple of awkward phrases where she needs to give her voice space to open up. (Taking down Freni from the shelf for comparison – EMI, 5/87 – I was not surprised to find how expansive and darkly glowing Gorchakova sounds next to Freni’s bright, tightly focused Italian soprano.) Among the other Verdi items, the Willow Song from Otello is predictably doom-laden, for Gorchakova is no simple, creamy, lyrical Desdemona. The Aida is less successful and sounds as if it is not yet fully in her voice. It might have been better to offer “Ritorna vincitor”, as she seems uncomfortable with long, slow phrases around the top of the stave. The top C is again very loud and the conclusion, broken off sharply in full voice, is not what Verdi asks for. After that, the Trovatore goes much better: the aria has splendid vocal depth and the cabaletta (one verse only) is surprisingly nimble, especially at Gergiev’s brilliant pace. Elsewhere his conducting of the Verdi could do with more pace.
As an interpreter of Tchaikovsky, Gorchakova has already won her laurels on the stage. Despite the size and dark colour of the voice, her soprano is still youthful enough for her to play a plausible Tatyana and the Letter Scene will be one of the major reasons for acquiring this disc, at least until she makes a complete recording of the opera. The heart of the scene is sung with the kind of pianissimo that one would use to carry to the back of the theatre, rather than an inward pianissimo intended for the microphone. Some may feel that more intimacy is needed. The Queen of Spades aria (Lisa’s short solo from Act 1, not her main aria) is so full of beautiful, soaring tone that one resents being cut off just at the point where Herman enters for their duet. The brief aria from The Enchantress includes an exciting high B. Elsewhere there is one worrying sign to be mentioned. That is a tendency to go flat when the music is soft and slow (both the Otello and the Aida suffer from passages of sinking pitch) and one has to hope that difficulties like this are not allowed to defeat her. Gorchakova is no highly polished automaton as a singer, as we know from a couple of problematical live appearances. Her artistry is about letting this voice out of its cage and harnessing its formidable energy. The Philips recording team have done well to capture it so truthfully in the studio. A vocal beast like this is not easily tamed.
