Baritone Gerald Finley's generous selection of Barber's songs includes two of his most familiar cycles, 11 individual songs, and Dover Beach, for baritone and string quartet. The songs all come from Barber's early period and range from "There is nae Lark," written when he was 17, to the Hermit Songs of 1953. Finley doesn't have a huge voice, but he can deliver plenty of power when required, and he has an appealing warmth and ease. His delivery is refreshingly free and unmannered, and it is ideally suited to the directness of Barber's songs. He shows wonderful sensitivity to the texts and makes even the most overdone songs, such as "The Daisies," sound convincing and newly imagined. The Hermit Songs are sung almost exclusively by women, perhaps because of the tradition that Barber established when he gave the premiere performance accompanying Leontyne Price, whose recording remains a gold standard. The texts, mostly written by Medieval Irish monks, largely reflect a male perspective, and Finley's fine performance ought to give courage to more men to take up the cycle. He brings more than the usual malice (and more than a little envy) to "Promiscuity." The more rambunctious songs, such as "Sea Snatch," and "The Heavenly Banquet," which he sings with an appropriate coarseness, benefit especially from his overtly masculine take. But even in the specifically feminine "St. Ita's Vision," Finley's tender version is fully persuasive. He and pianist Julius Drake take "Monk and his Cat" just a hair more slowly than it's usually done, and their rhythmic flexibility gives it a languid feline grace that makes it a standout on the album. Finley's darkly dramatic reading of Dover Beach, with the Aronowitz Ensemble, makes this piece, which can be difficult to pull off, genuinely moving. Drake's sensitive accompaniments have an especially fine sense of timing, and he is fully sensitive to the give and take the songs require. Finley's assured and lyrical performances and the insight he brings to the variety of selections make this an excellent introduction to Barber's songs and should be of interest to anyone who loves twentieth century vocal literature.

Gerald Finley, Julius Drake - Samuel Barber: Songs (2007)

Performances of this calibre emphasise Barber’s stature in the mainstream of 20th-century song composers. The tradition is Anglo-American and “There’s nae lark”, written when Barber was 16 to a poem by Swinburne in imitation Scots, could even be by Quilter. But Barber soon gets into his stride and by the time he reached his Three Songs, Op†10, there’s a rare kind of intensity as impressive as anything on this CD. The poems are from James Joyce’s Chamber Music; Barber set a few more, such as “In the dark pinewood” included here; but what a tragedy he never set the whole cycle that could have been an American Winterreise. The Hermit Songs, fey and whimsically amusing, are probably the best-known set.

The immediate comparison is with the Gramophone Award-winning Thomas Hampson, who is accompanied by John Browning, a close friend and colleague of Barber’s. Finley’s voice is lower – he transposes many of the songs – and richer, with nothing to fear alongside Hampson, who is anyway on a two-CD set. Mostly I prefer Finley, and the recording is warmer.

“Sure on the shining night” is vintage Barber, and Finley and Drake are impeccable (as are the Aronowitz Quartet in Dover Beach). The French songs, to poems by Rilke, who did write in French, have less character, but the single songs are all gems. This is another outstanding Hyperion release that does credit to Barber in what will soon be a run-up to his centenary.

Review by Peter Dickinson, Gramophone

Classical The programme for Gerald Finley's recital with pianist Julius Drake consisted of Schumann's Dichterliebe, Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs and a group of songs by Charles Ives. An unusual combination, some might think, though the concert was carefully constructed to take us on an emotional journey from brooding introspection via an examination of the pleasures of solitude to a final celebration of life in all its diversity. Throughout, Finley's range as a performer was never in doubt. He is already justly famous as an exponent of American song, bettered by few in Ives above all. His Dichterliebe, however, will also linger in the memory as one of the finest interpretations to be heard for some time.

The cycle arouses mixed feelings. Some have wondered whether the word "love" in the title is entirely appropriate to its content. The text dreamily addresses an unknown woman, before showering her with imprecations when she fails to live up to an impossible ideal. Schumann's setting proceeds by a process of creation and dissolution, juxtaposing rapturous melodies with thematic fragmentation. It's far from being conventionally romantic, and Finley emphasised its neurotic undertow. He sang with an urgent, pressurised lyricism throughout, sometimes blanch ing his tone towards a timorous mezza voce, at other times letting a rasp intrude as obsessive anger took over. Drake matched his every emotional shift.

Barber's Hermit Songs is another tricky cycle, its spirituality offset by a gentle worldliness that embraces monastic gossip about female sexuality and the joys of watching a pet cat chasing mice. The songs are uneven, though Finley sang them with a combination of relaxed charm and great fervour. The closing Ives group was simply a knockout, rich in verbal detail and full of naive wonder at the beauty and pain of creation. An exemplary recital by one of the great singers of our time.
