Bij Venetiaanse muziek van rond 1700 is de eerste naam die bij je opkomt: Antonio Vivaldi. Geen twijfel mogelijk. Moeilijker wordt het als je het nummer twee moet noemen: Albinoni? Marcello? Tartini? Voor luitist (en dirigent) Ivano Zaneghi was er maar één die qua roem en vaardigheden de vergelijking met Vivaldi kon doorstaan, en dat was Baldassare Galuppi (1706-1785). De verfijning in muzikale expressie en de elegante stijl van zijn wereldlijke en geestelijke composities zijn inderdaad opmerkelijk. Sommige van de stukken op deze cd bleven ongepubliceerd. De cantate 'La scusa', vermoedelijk uit de jaren 1770, is bewaard in een manuscript in de Venetiaanse Marciana bibliotheek. Dit werkje, geschreven in een stoutmoedige en sterk expressieve stijl, toont aan dat de rijpe Galuppi mee was met de vernieuwingen van zijn tijd. In de sonates, bewaard in de Uppsala bibliotheek in Zweden, bespeur je al een vleugje classicisme. Het concerto voor fagot tenslotte, schreef Galuppi oorspronkelijk voor de fluit. Maar met zijn ernstige karakter en melancholische geluid is de fagot ook erg geschikt voor deze muziek. Alt Sara Mingardo vertolkt de cantate "La Scusa" erg expressief en met veel inlevingsvermogen. Haar bewogen interpretatie van de aangrijpende aria "Trova un sol, mia bella Clori" heeft alles om een 'barok-hit' te worden. De begeleiding van het nieuwe barokensemble 'L'Opera Stravagante' is kleurrijk en gevoelig; vooral de continugroep o.l.v. luitist Ivano Zanenghi toont zich bijzonder vindingrijk. De voortreffelijke solisten in de concerto's, fagottist Sergio Azzolini en klavecinist Massimiliano Raschietti, kenden we al van opnamen met gerenommeerde Italiaanse barokensembles als Concerto Italiano en Europa Galante. Ook de twee sonates worden met veel virtuositeit en flair uitgevoerd door de leden van dit 'L'opera Stravagante', een ensemble dat we goed in het oog gaan houden. De opname, gemaakt door de Oostenrijkse omroep, heeft een warme gloed, maar helaas ook een tikkeltje te veel galm. Voor het overige is dit een must voor de liefhebbers van onbekende, maar hoogst verleidelijke barokmuziek.
