Jackie Morris - Periscope Heart (2017)

With her 5th album in 11 years, Jackie Morris once again demonstrates the wit, warmth and engaging vitality that put her past albums among Top Albums of the Month or Year on Folk and Americana Radio Airplay charts. But Periscope Heart looks beyond expectations, delving deeper into psyche, soul and heart. Morris writes in an irrepressible variety of styles ranging from ballads to bluegrass, from political folk rock to a generous portion of blues – old-time, good time, or a jazzy “film noir” feel. There’s even an upbeat track with a Cuban flavor, and another song accented by French. But running beneath all these diverse songs is a deep-rooted sense of humor and irony, and a serious belief in the need for fun and love and kindness in this often hard and painful world.

Once again, Morris is accompanied by some of the West Coast’s most outstanding musicians, including lead guitarist Ed Tree….multi-instrumentalist David West…and bassist David Piltch; and the album is sprinkled with exciting guest artists like harmonica-player Tom Ball and pianist Julie Bonk. They add yet another dimension to Morris’ own inviting melodies and accessible lyrics. You can’t help but nod and smile when you listen.
