Hello buddies! Here you are an OOP cd with several orchestral works by the gifted British pianist and composer John McCabe. Enjoy!! The Granada Television film about Chagall's stained-glass windows in Jerusalem representing the twelve tribes of Israel (including the priestly Levites, not the tribe of Manasseh) will have been seen by many readers. John McCabe's music for it is admirable background material, beautifully scored, thoroughly varied. I did not see the film and eventually found myself inventing quite other situations for which it seemed to do as well, including domestic circumstances, for instance a quiet dinner party. It is immaculately made, admirably scored. The invention is quite unsophisticated: some people will be attracted by it, but if you want music to concentrate upon while you listen, this doesn't do. It is very light and rather 1940-ish, not particularly memorable, as are the earlier Hartmann Variations, technically expert but without signs of compelling invention or inevitability. Brilliant sound, admirable playing, well made music.
