Gottfried Stölzel was a highly skilled, sometimes exceptionally inventive composer among whose gifts was the ability to devise extremely economical yet musically involving, textually illustrative, structurally refined, motivically fluent cantatas. It’s nowhere near great music, but much of it is quite good, clearly written for singers of some accomplishment, with leanly-scored yet often imaginatively colored orchestral accompaniments. Here are six cantatas from cycles written in 1735/36 and 1736/37, first performed together in pairs for Pentecost services in 1737. Added to the end of the program is another, earlier work that shows a marked stylistic contrast to the later pieces. Most of these cantatas begin with a short chorus, sometimes containing what sounds like a full-fledged fugue that dissolves as quickly as it begins, and then proceed through a couple of arias and recitatives, ending with a chorale.
All of the music here is sung by four soloists, and all four are very fine, capable singers–involved, stylish, sensitive, and impressive in their command of the recitative passages. Highlights include the Bach-like opening “chorus” of Daran ist erschienen; the beautiful soprano aria “Mein geist verlieret sich im Denken”, ideally sung by Dorothee Mields; the lovely voice/orchestra interplay in another soprano aria, “Ich werfe mich zu deinen Füßen”; the gently dancing triple-meter bass aria (à la Bach) “Wenn Gnüge und Leben”; and the unusually dramatic tenor aria from the same cantata, underscored by fiery, furious strings. But perhaps most notable is that earlier cantata from 1732, Er heißet Friedefürst. With its richer textures, more expressive use of dynamic changes, rests, accents, dotted rhythms, and tempo shifts, it almost sounds as if it came from another composer. While this program will be of primary interest to Baroque music fans and specialists, it’s a welcome addition to a catalog that still pays scant attention to worthy if less-brilliant contemporaries of Bach and Handel. My only real complaint here is that in the chorus movements, the voices sound unnaturally forward and close, otherwise, the sound is fine.–David Vernier
