This offering from the band from Tennessee is a different animal altogether from Lex Rex (2002), it has that signature Glass Hammer sound, and it's deeply rooted in 70's styled classic prog. But the band sounds energized here, and the songs are a bit more upbeat, more melodic, yet in no way have they sacrificed all that makes a great prog record.

Journeyman tenor saxophonist Von Freeman pays tribute to his first major influences Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Charlie Parker on The Great Divide. Centered around Freeman's gorgeously blue, often skronky sax tone, the album works almost conceptually with Freeman representing the divide between the cool vulnerability of Young, the muscular swing of Hawkins, and the cerebral hipness of Parker. This is a meaty, visceral album full of well-worn standards that nonetheless feels immediate and relevant.

On this atmospheric set, Italian pianist Salvatore Bonafede performs a set of themes from the film The Leopard. While a few of the melodies are brief and act as transitions (particularly a couple Verdi pieces), there are some strong compositions here that are uplifted by the superior trumpet and flügelhorn playing of Enrico Rava. Rava sometimes sounds a bit like Miles and at other times drops the coolness for some hotter solos. Guitarist John Abercrombie also adds to the atmosphere, as does guest acoustic guitarist Ralph Towner. Although none of the themes (mostly by film composer Nino Rota) are destined to become standards, the rich melodies, Rava's tone (which is often filled with longing), and Bonafede's arrangements make this a haunting and memorable outing. ~ AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow

It all began during a snowy Christmas in 1999: saxophonist Jonas Knutsson met up for the first time with guitarist Johan Norberg to do some spontaneous recording sessions at Norberg’s flat, and got carried away during several hours of playing. They reached such a level of mutual understanding that the recordings were passed between friends of the two Swedish musicians for the next few years. Then Knutsson and Norberg listened again to the recordings - and decided to go to a proper studio. The result is a CD which both moves between and merges jazz and Swedish folk elements: "Norrland". The nature of the deep understanding between two musicians: thus "Norrland" can be described. Knutsson and Norberg cultivate the fine shadings, and a sensitive dialogue. They create floating, but in some ways plausible, sounds: tender, but never harmless musical images of the landscape…

Prince's star faded not long after he won emancipation from Warner Brothers in 1995, as he abandoned the mainstream so he could follow his whims however he liked. Which meant that he effectively started making records for nobody but himself, whether that meant triple-disc collections of new material or an all-instrumental smooth jazz album, and in short order, his fans started dwindling away to nothing but the hardcore, who themselves had their patience tried by such antics as Prince suing his own fanzine in the late '90s. It seemed that he was fated to permanently wander in the wilderness, making music for an ever more selective audience, until he suddenly decided in 2004 that he wanted to be back in the game, returning to the spotlight with acclaimed performances at the Grammys and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, announcing an all-hits tour, and releasing Musicology, his first major-label distributed album in five years…

Rhino's – or, more accurately, Sire/Warner/Rhino's – Best of Talking Heads follows 2003's box set Once in a Lifetime by a year, and it features the same remastering from that set. It also shares part of a title with the 1992 U.K. compilation The Best of Talking Heads: Once in a Lifetime, which was released the same year as the American double-disc overview Popular Favorites: Sand in the Vaseline. Given the similar titles, similar release dates, and similar track listings, it's easy to get confused at first, but all you need to know is that if you're looking for a comprehensive collection, get the Rhino box, and if you want a disc of hits, get this single-disc Rhino collection…

This record is dedicated to the frequent association of two French scores, gems from "la Belle Epoque" (more or less the Edwardian Era), played by a string quartet which, following their mentor Sandor Vegh's example, is undertaking a new career : after a first and brilliant appearance (1976-84) under the name of Orlando, the quartet is back as Párkányí Quartet, from the name of the Hungarian born "primarius", István Párkányí. Only one member was changed, the cellist Michael Müller replacing Stefan Metz.

The Deutsche Schubert-Lied-Edition presents all Schubert’s Lieder, over 700 songs, grouped according to the poets who inspired him. Thanks to Bärenreiter’s Neue Schubert-Ausgabe, which uses primary sources, the performers have been able to benefit from the most recent research of the editorial team. The third volume devoted to settings of poems by Goethe includes the best known song of all, Erlkönig. These songs for male voice range from 1814 to the 1820s, some in Goethe’s preferred strophic form, others through-composed.

Volume three in the Classics Georgie Auld chronology opens with the last four sides he cut for the Musicraft label on June 14, 1946. The 16-piece big band had Neal Hefti in the trumpet section, Auld, Al Cohn and Serge Chaloff in the reeds, and vocalist Sarah Vaughan featured on "You're Blasé." While Hefti's two original compositions are pleasantly modern sounding, the true gem from this date was Budd Johnson's rock-solid "Canyon Passage." Changes in the postwar entertainment industry resulted in the dissolution and dispersal of many big bands. Auld threw in the towel and waited about two-and-a-half years before resuming his recording career on January 17, 1949. His new band had ten pieces, including trombonist Billy Byers, pianist Jimmy Rowles and drummer Alvin Stoller…
