The incidental music to König Stephan, Op. 117, must be among Beethoven's least often performed works, with only the overture making regular appearances on concert programs. The music was written for a play marking the opening of a theater in what is now Budapest; it was a festive event that drew from Beethoven no profound response. However, aficionados of the transition to Beethoven's late style will be glad to have this recording, one of just a few available. Compared with, say, the incidental music to Egmont, Op. 84, the music is striking in its simplicity, and there are a few hints, notably in the first part of the "Geistlicher Marsch," of the mystical musical language to come. That piece, with its succession of spoken, orchestral, and choral passages, also suggests what the occasionally discussed second Beethoven opera might have sounded like. Another attraction, at least for film buffs, is the presence of actor Bernd Tauber, the chief helmsman in the suspense classic Das Boot, as the speaker. Also uncommon is to hear all four of the Fidelio/Leonore overtures in one place, and hearing them this way uniquely brings home the musical issues with which Beethoven struggled in this composition. The performances by the Cappella Aquileia and the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno are all that could be desired, punchy and sharp in the orchestral work, and appropriately festive or angelic from the choristers. The CPO label delivers clean, straightforward sound from the Festspielhaus Congress Centrum Heidenheim on a recording that will doubtless find a place in many Beethoven collections.–James Manheim
