Review: Recorded live on June 29 and July 1, 1973, the music on this potent compilation came together in the famously open-minded atmosphere of the Montreux Jazz Festival, where blues and jazz were presented as bountiful branches of the same family tree. Additionally, Montreux Blues Festival 1973 acts as a sort of Maison de Blues sampler; the first three tracks, for example, also appear on Memphis Slim's Very Much Alive and in Montreux, a fabulous concert album with guitarist Freddy King sitting in on "Lend Me Your Love." Using sidemen from King's own band and also that of Little Milton, the producers were able to provide ample and able backing for Willie Mabon and Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. Guitarists involved in this interchangeable chemistry were Joe "Jammer" Wright and McHouston "Mickey" Baker, who also performed a couple of roughneck solo blues numbers as the opening act on June 29. Maison de Blues has brought out Baker's entire Montreux set under his title of Real Folk Blues. For a real kick, compare Gatemouth Brown's nearly 12-minute version of "The Drifter Rides Again" with its fiery sequel, the "Devil Blues," recorded in December 1974 by George Adams and Charles Mingus [see Charles Mingus Changes One on Atlantic Records]. Gatemouth's contribution to Montreux Blues Festival 1973 is particularly enjoyable, as the red hot "Louisiana Breakdown," the breakneck bluegrass "Highball for Gate," and a funky "Cajun Blues" lead directly to a really smart jam on Muddy Waters' "Got My Mojo Working."
