Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (ed. Beyer): Mass No. 19 in D minor, K626, "Requiem" - Ileana Cotrubas (soprano), Helen Watts (contralto), Robert Tear (tenor), John Shirley-Quirk (bass), Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields and Chorus conducted by Neville Marriner.
The feature that distinguishes this recording of the Mozart Requiem from all the other available versions is that it is based on the edition by Franz Beyer (published by Eulenburg in 1971), the intention of which was to remove so far as is possible the faulty harmonic realizations and the frequently insensitive instrumentation in the completion of the score after Mozart's death by his pupil Franz Xavier Sussmayr. The most noticeable features are a reduction of the colla pane writing for the three trombones (especially in the "Benedictus"); the curtailing of the trombone solo in the "Tuba mirum", after the words "ante thronum" (at theentry of the solo tenor)— and the slight extension of the closing bars of the "Osanna" fugue.
Neville Marriner's new recording has the field to itself. Marriner (who conducted a performance in the Royal Albert Hall last February with the same chorus and orchestra but only one of the soloists featured on the record— Helen Watts) gives a polished account, and receives a better balanced, less brass-heavy recording. The choral singing and orchestral playing are of high quality, and there is an excellent team of soloists in Ileana Cotrubas, Helen Watts, Robert Tear and John Shirley Quirk. If the performance as a whole suggests the concert hall rather than the cathedral, it is nevertheless appropriately restrained and classical in style—notably so in a direct comparison with Karajan's gleaming, operatic performance on DG (2530 705, 12/76)…
Neville Marriner's version is certainly worth a place among the two or three most satisfactory recordings of this great work; and in its use of the Beyer text it has some claim to being closer than any of the other available versions to the sound Mozart himself had in mind.
