The CIMP label has documented trumpeter Paul Smoker well through the years. He appeared as either a sideman or leader on nine other recordings on the label before this one. Like his groundbreaking album Healing Song, the trumpeter focuses on deconstructing melodies, although this time they are mostly ones contributed by him or his colleagues, and insofar as they are unfamiliar, the results are somewhat less compelling. Using a streamlined trio of acoustic guitar, string bass, and trumpet, Smoker is in his usual good form, and the extended times for each track (four are more than 11 minutes) allow for some outstanding explorations by not only the trumpeter, but also from guitarist Steve Salerno and bassist Ken Filiano, none of whom disappoint. As for the charts, they are alternatively powerful and lovely, though hardly memorable. The poignant "Elegy (For Lester Bowie)," coming on the heals of Bowie's death, is particularly effective, and makes the listener realize how similar Smoker's taffy-like style is to that of Bowie. They share a common ability to stretch notes, with ragged blasts, growls, and a general disregard for convention, following their paths to unexplored grounds. All that is in full evidence here, as Smoker is the predominate voice on every piece. The underrated trumpeter is almost always pure pleasure, and while this is not his best album, it is certainly filled with constant pleasures.
