Thomas Arne, (who wrote “Rule Britannia”) is underplayed. Practically everything I’ve heard by him is of interest on multiple levels, either as an original voice utilizing the harmonic and melodic materials of the English baroque style, or as an innovator, at least to my ears, conjuring novel expressions within those materials, or simply as a good tunesmith.
Both harpsichord and organ are featured in these marvelous keyboard concertos. The mood is often quite grand and regal with processional opening movements setting the stage for the more virtuoso passages in succeeding movements.
The sound quality of the recorded venue, All Hallow's Church, Gospel Oak, London, has a rich reverberation that is luxurious but not long enough to be annoying. This large sound in fact further enhances the grandiose quality of Arne’s concertos.
The marvelous 5th concerto in G minor, with an opening Largo full of half cadences on the dominant but favoring the leading tone high in the strings, is particularly imaginative and noteworthy as each cadence leaves you hanging only to be somewhat satisfied by resolution within the succeeding melody. All of these four movement concertos offer different approaches within the style so as to be quite distinctive and enjoyable. If Arne is new to you, on repeated listening you’ll have a favorite, then a second favorite and then a third.
The Parley of Instruments is directed from the keyboard by Paul Nicholson who plays and conducts with complete assurance and creative energy. Very highly recommended.– Greg La Traille
