    Sun Goddess is the 1974 album by jazz musician Ramsey Lewis. The album is known for featuring two songs backed by Earth, Wind & Fire and their Phenix Horns, but other songs include musicianship from Derf Reklaw, Cleveland Eaton and Maurice Jennings. Two different masterings are being posted here: the first is from the first CD pressing released in 1990 by Columbia Records that would be considered unmastered, or a "flat transfer" while the other is a Japanese remastered pressing released in 1999. The MP3's being made for the album is taken from the Japanese mastering.

    This was one of Ramsey Lewis' biggest albums of the 1970's, a nice mixture of funk and jazz, and Lewis' continued exploration of electric jazz, which had split some fans. The album was made popular by the title track, which wasn't released as a single but was played as one, as it featured Earth Wind & Fire (EW&F's Maurice White was the drummer for the Ramsey Lewis Trio in the 1960's). "Hot Dawgit", which also featured EW&F, was released as a single but people embraced the title track. It was so popular that EW&F also put it into their live set in 1975, and included it on their live album, Gratitude. The other tracks feature Cleveland Eaton on bass and Maurice Jennings on drums, along with Byron Gregory on guitar. But it's Johnny Graham's opening guitar riff in "Sun Goddess", and that saxophone solo from the late Don Myrick, that made this into an instant classic for jazz, soul, and funk fans.
