What could more enticing than two masterpieces written by composers still in their twenties? In a letter to his exacting father, Leopold, Mozart said he thought his recently completed quintet, K452, was his best work yet. And this in the midst of an extraordinarily purple patch, even by his standards. Beethoven's quintet (for the same instruments and in the same key) was written in deliberate imitation of Mozart's, perhaps in as much a spirit of friendly competition as homage.
The real competition now, though, is between different versions of these works. And there are quite a few of them. (Because of their obvious similarities, they are very often paired.) One striking and winning feature of this particular recording is that the keyboard is a fortepiano, thus giving us a good idea of how the pieces would have sounded originally. For me, the fortepiano is so much easier on the ear in combination with other period instruments, some of which sound wonderfully 'primitive' here. Anthony Halstead's horn, especially, produces a unique timbre. All in all, these tonalities are cooler and less saccharine than those to which we've become accustomed. In fact, they're altogether more interesting as well as being more authentic.
Originally released on the Decca label, this is the best version I've yet come across. It represents one of the (relatively) early triumphs of original instrument recording that is currently helping to recreate the contemporary sound world of Beethoven.
