Juan García de Salazar was a Spanish Baroque composer from the Basque country who spent most of his career working at Zamora Cathedral; he is so obscure the entry for him in the New Grove doesn't even include a list of his works. Musicologist Manuel Sagastume Arregi has pulled together a number of Salazar's extant movements related to the Vespers service with additional material to create Juan García de Salazar: Complete Vespers of Our Lady in Naxos' Spanish Classics series. It is performed by the Basque ensemble Capilla Peñaflorida and features the period wind group Ministriles de Marsias and the fine baritone of Josep Cabré. There are no stars here, though – everything on Juan García de Salazar: Complete Vespers of Our Lady is done to the service of the music, which is outstanding. Sagastume Arregi's realization of García de Salazar's Vespers service incorporates appropriate plainchant sections taken from a Basque hymnal dated 1692, organ music by García de Salazar's contemporaries José Ximenez and Martín Garcia de Olagüe, instrumental arrangements of García de Salazar's motets, and an arrangement of Tomás Luis de Victoria's Vidi speciosam probably made by García de Salazar himself.

Although technically Baroque music and dating from the late seventeenth century, it is not surprising that García de Salazar's music contains a fair amount of modeling from Renaissance practices. The organ music, played by Javier Sarasúa, is splendid and played on a single-manual instrument that betrays that distinctive nasal tonal quality endemic to Spanish organs. Most of the texts are in Latin, but there are a few sections scored out in rapid-fire Castilian Spanish, as well. One can hardly think of a genre more obscure than Basque Baroque sacred music, and the resulting lack of familiarity might serve to scare some potential listeners away. They would be missing out, because everything about Juan García de Salazar: Complete Vespers of Our Lady is glorious and beautiful – the singing, the ambience of the unnamed cathedral in Villabuena where this was recorded, the instrumental playing, organ, and music. Rather than pulling something out of the mothballs that was better left in the closet, Manuel Sagastume Arregi has discovered through his hard work on behalf of Basque sacred music an entire musical style that should prove a revelation, and a delight, to all.

Review by Uncle Dave Lewis, Allmusic.com

This is a fair way off the beaten track. Juan García de Salazar rates just a couple of short paragraphs in New Grove, although a Requiem of his performed by the same forces has been recorded on K617 (not reviewed in Fanfare), and there are two or three other discs that have included his works. What detail is known of García de Salazar is soon told. He was born in the Álava province of the Basque region in February 1639. After serving as a chorister at Burgos Cathedral, he was appointed maestro di capilla at the collegiate church in Toro, an appointment followed in 1663 by a similar post at El Burgo de Osma Cathedral. García de Salazar’s final appointment was as maestro of Zamora Cathedral, a position he retained until his death on July 8, 1710.

García de Salazar’s extant list of works appears to consist wholly of sacred choral works that include settings in both Spanish and Latin, and which stylistically embrace both the stile antico and more modern styles. The present disc includes three Vespers psalms, Dixit Dominus, Laetatus sum, and Lauda Jerusalem, along with a Magnificat and motets set within the context of a Vespers reconstruction. Because there are no existing settings by the composer of the remaining Vespers psalms, Laudate pueri and Nisi Dominus, they are given in plainchant in alternatim with organ verses by a contemporary of García de Salazar’s, Martin García de Olagüe. Additionally, and in accordance with contemporary practice, a number of instrumental pieces for wind and brass or organ are interpolated.

With the exception of the hymn Ave maris stella, which is set in a mixture of styles, and the small-scale motet Quae es ista, most of the García de Salazar works here are in the antiphonal coro spezzato style familiar from the works of his more famous near-contemporary Francisco Guerrero. Which is to say that they rely primarily on sumptuous block harmonies and largely syllabic word-setting dependent on sonority and often-imitative antiphonal effects. Yet there is also a wonderfully expressive quality to the music, heard at its most affecting in the tenderness of such passages as “Et misericordia” from the Magnificat. By way of contrast, the music often takes a thrilling verve and resplendency, nowhere to more telling effect than at the dynamic to Lauda, Jerusalem, where the words of praise are tossed from part to part.

The performances of all this music are outstanding, with vibrant and strongly communicative and projected choral singing delivered with rare clarity of diction. There are also some fine solo contributions, among them the outstanding singing of alto Alicia Borges in the lovely motet Sancta Maria, succurre miseris. Equally commendable are the wind and brass of the Ministriles de Marsias and the organ-playing of Javier Sarasúa on a bright, characterful instrument, about which it would have been helpful to be told more, as indeed it would about the music itself. The sound quality also deserves special plaudits for the manner in which it has captured the splendid acoustic and ideal ambiance of the recording location. In sum, this is something of a treasure of a disc, a splendid addition to the catalog that is both thoroughly rewarding and spiritually uplifting.
