This would not be the album to start with for newcomers to SMB's canon, but for true fans it deserves closer attention. This is Steve Miller's most daring and experimental album. Made in the mid-80s when synthesizer dominated music was at its peak popularity, it is prominently dated by the recording and production techniques that marked nearly every album released in this era. The album's format seems to follow a theme which is incomprehensible, but once you decide to drop attempts to figure out what it's supposed to mean and allow the weirdness and strange beauty of these songs to wash over you it's great fun. After the introduction leads to the first complete song, a lush synth laden instrumental titled Daybreak I was hooked. It’s followed by what could have been its hit is Who Do You Love which is one of SMB's overlooked gems. A simple romantic ballad in the best SMB tradition with layered vocals and catchy hooks. It's the oasis of normality in a sea of weirdness, but it's weird in a good way. The boldness of his approach, his immersion in what was then state of art digital technology is admirable. However, his guitar skills are mostly hidden on this album in favor of the keyboards. The except on Golden Opportunities where he allows himself to briefly cut loose. Steve Miller would never push the boundaries of his music this far out again and it's challenging and fun to accompany him on his journey. This album includes all the elements of Steve Miller Band awash in synthesizers. A conscious attempt to utilize every "modern" technique available and present a New Wave version of his group is made but he can't overcome his inherent instincts to create lush traditional pop rock music ready for rock radio. Unfortunately, everyone was baffled by his experimental approach as well as the glossy production and slick synthesizer sound of new wave miller band. It's as if after being transported on the intro to Jet Airliner or Electrolux Imbroglio he had just continued catapulting through space.Tracklist:
