What the world needs more of is intelligently planned, stupendously played, and brilliantly recorded collections like this one. These two discs contain all the piano works of Michael Tippett, works that come from every period of the composer's very long life except his very last. It includes the youthful, tuneful Piano Sonata No. 1 written between 1936 and 1938 and revised in 1941, the massive Fantasia on a Theme of Handel from 1941, the exuberant Piano Concerto from 1955, the experimental Piano Sonata No. 2, the gnomic almost Beethovenian Piano Sonata No. 3 from 1973, and the gnarly post-Beethovenian Piano Sonata No. 4. It features a bravura performance by pianist Steven Osborne that makes the best case for all the music, no matter how outré or recherché its harmonic proclivities or rhythmic audacities. Osborne has the emotional enthusiasm, intellectual clarity, physical strength, and sheer willpower to make listeners believe that Tippett is a major English composer and make them wonder why they ever doubted it. With the superlative accompaniment of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Martyn Brabbins in the Concerto and the Fantasia and the sparkling recording by Andrew Keener for Hyperion, this disc marks a major step forward in the Tippett discography.

Review by James Leonard, Allmusic.com

The young Tippett – magpie and maverick – sought maximum intensity of feeling while shunning what he felt to be the sentimental fervour of Elgar, Bax and Walton. Equally abhorrent were the pastoral pieties of Vaughan Williams. Tippett took his stand with Blake and Yeats rather than Bunyan, and a Blake whose “bow of burning gold” required something altogether less complacent than Parry’s well upholstered jingoism.

The results are plain to hear in Tippett’s earliest works for piano, the First Sonata and the Handel Fantasia. The slow movement of the sonata may flirt briefly with Hindemith-style counterpoint but the predominant spirit is fiery and spontaneous, with a reinvigorated romanticism embracing those aspects of popular music which Tippett believed to have “classical” potential.

The road ahead was bumpy and he occasionally lost his way, as in the very long slow movement of the Third Sonata, aspiring to Beethovenian depth but bogged down in overly dense textures. There are also several repetitions too many in the Fourth Sonata, though the final movement’s gently poetic sense of resignation more than compensates.

Most powerful of all is the mighty Concerto, starkly and confidently poised between Tippett’s still richly potent earlier style and the brave new possibilities explored in its visionary central movement. This recording blends the piano in with the orchestra, acknowledging the work’s symphonic attributes, and there is a certain recessed quality to the sound of the piece throughout. Nevertheless, the eloquence and fantasy of what is undoubtedly one of the major works of the 1950s is superbly projected in a performance which need fear no comparison with the best earlier recordings, by John Ogdon (EMI, 12/91R) and Howard Shelley (Chandos, 4/95). As for the sonatas, Steven Osborne is at least the equal of Paul Crossley (CRD, 6/92) in interpretative empathy, and has the advantage of superlative modern recording. There’s a further advantage: perceptive and lucid booklet-notes by Ian Kemp, Tippett’s friend and biographer, and one of Osborne’s mentors. The set is dedicated to him.

Review by Arnold Whittall, Gramophone

This is full-blooded, dramatic, joyful music. Steven Osborne makes the works his own, dealing with their considerable technical difficulties with ease and aplomb. Osborne was recently quoted on Tippett's piano works in International Piano magazine, saying 'I can’t think of any late 20th-century music that is more gripping to perform'. Listening to these discs, I can't think of a performance that could be more gripping. Certainly, considering his long relationship with Tippett's piano music, there couldn't have been a more appropriate 21st-century pianist to make this recording. He is joined by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins.

Tippett's piano works consist of his Piano Concerto, the Fantasia on a theme of Handel, and his four piano sonatas. Grouped together like this, they offer a compact overview of Tippett's compositional journey over the decades, with Piano Sonata No.1 dating from 1936-8, through to Piano Sonata No.4, composed in 1983-4.

The recording starts with the Piano Concerto, composed in 1953-5, and Osborne's playing hits the work's confident exuberance spot on. Under his fingers, the piano glitters and glides through the multi-faceted concerto with luminosity and depth, and his playing is perfectly matched by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins.

Tippett believed that, rather than composing for pure pleasure, it was his duty to reflect on society and write for its nourishment and therapy. In the sleeve notes, Osborne quotes Tippett's aim for his compositions to contain 'images of vigour for a decadent period, images of calm for one too violent', and Osborne's playing achieves exactly that. From the escapist Piano Sonata No.1, which feels as if intended as a British respite from the foreboding atmosphere of 1930s Europe, to the structural complexities of the winterly Sonata No.4, Osborne plays with lyricism and emotion. This is intelligent, soulful, technically brilliant, and a must-listen.

The musical and intellectual exuberance of Tippett's music is fully demonstrated in his piano works, recorded here in their entirety on a double CD. The sonatas and concertante works recorded here offer a more compact survey of the various stages of his composing career than any other of the traditional genres he favoured: symphony, opera, and string quartet.

Every one of Tippett's six piano works is substantial, if not in length then in compositional ambition. By temperament he conceived music on a large scale and was more attracted to the sonata than the short genre piece typical of the famous pianist-composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Being only a moderate pianist himself his piano writing speaks of an imagination directed not by virtuosity or routine movements of the fingers or the blandishments of the sustaining pedal but one set free to explore the contrapuntal style and fascination with rhythm it was heir to.

This is full-blooded, dramatic, joyful music. Steven Osborne makes the works his own, dealing with their considerable technical difficulties with ease and aplomb. He is joined by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under Martyn Brabbins.
