Those familiar with The Lindsays’ recent Haydn recordings will need little encouragement to sample this set. Haydn demands close attention from his listeners; as with a wellconstructed story‚ each event has significance‚ and it’s a measure of The Lindsays’ knowledge and appreciation of the music that they are able to bring each episode to life in a way that illuminates its position in the overall plan. In each of the sonata form movements they take both repeats‚ and it’s fascinating to hear how they approach the music differently the second time round; the development section in No 4’s opening Allegro‚ full of energy first time‚ coasts along in top gear when it is repeated. The only movements I found slightly disappointing were the minuets; all three are marked Allegretto‚ yet they all sound slightly staid. The trios are another matter – Haydn’s own fingerings in No 6‚ implying elegant upward slides‚ are played most beautifully‚ and Peter Cropper’s solo passage in No 4 is a model of suave‚ poised violin playing. The slow movements are lovely: No 5’s Adagio richly lyrical and luminous‚ No 6’s Andante even more striking with its tranquil interweaving arpeggios and fiercely dramatic middle section. The Lindsays’ lively manner perfectly catches the wit of Haydn’s finales.
