The four Mozart flute quartets make up a nicely tidy CD, and the Nash Ensemble's neat and pointed playing make it an enjoyable one too. Philippa Davies is a pleasure to listen to, clean and unusually even in tone, a tone which is round and full but not in the least watery; lively and rhythmic in her articulation. And the string players give firm, indeed sturdy support. Tempos are well chosen—the andante opening of K285a moves smoothly, the lovely adagio centrepiece of K285 is slow enough to allow plenty of room for manoeuvre, while the moods of the different variations of K285b are happily touched off. What perhaps is lacking is a sense of the essentially vocal shape of Mozart's lines. Phrases are not moulded with much audible affection, or rounded off with much grace. While the K285 adagio is as I noted, amply leisurely, the players do not in fact make much use of the time they have allowed themselves and the music comes out a little coolly and objectively. And sometimes the accompaniments have a slightly nervy, almost pushy quality. Perfectly good performances, to be sure, but a hint more of relaxation, of letting the music take its natural shape, would have made them really distinguished.–Stanley Sadie
