Twennynine is the name of a music group formed in 1979. The group featured jazz fusion drummer Lenny White with Carla Vaughn, Joycelyn Smith, Skip Anderson, Barry Johnson, and Eddie Martinez. Their best-known song was "Peanut Butter".

No one mistook Lenny White for a bop purist in the 1970s, when the drummer was famous for his work with Chick Corea's influential fusion outfit Return to Forever. Under Corea's leadership, White embraced a daring mixture of jazz, rock, and funk; Return to Forever wasn't straight-ahead bop, but its members did a lot of improvising. White's work with Return to Forever earned him a reputation as a fusion instrumentalist, and his first recordings as a leader were equally fusion-oriented. So it came as a major surprise when, in 1979, White assembled a band that had very little to do with instrumental fusion. The band was billed as Twennynine featuring Lenny White, and its first project, Best of Friends, emphasizes vocal-oriented funk and soul. Some fusion lovers weren't happy with White's change of direction, but from an R&B standpoint, this 1979 LP (which White produced with Earth, Wind & Fire's Larry Dunn) has a lot going for it. With White on drums, various Twennynine members handle the lead vocals on tracks that range from the goofy funk smoker "Peanut Butter" (a major hit) to sleek, sophisticated R&B offerings like "Betta," "Oh, Sylvie," and the lovely "Morning Sunrise." The album's only fusion instrumental is "Tropical Nights"; otherwise, this is very much an R&B album. Like Tom Browne and Bernard Wright, Twennynine was part of Jamaica, Queens' soul/funk scene of the late '70s and early '80s, which was best known for "Peanut Butter" and Browne's "Funkin' for Jamaica." Best of Friends is hardly the fusion workout that Return to Forever fans wanted White to provide in 1979, but for R&B enthusiasts, it is rightly considered one of the finest albums that the Jamaica scene had to offer.

As drummer Lenny White left the influential jazz/rock act Return to Forever shortly before its decline, he started to successfully test the commercial R&B/pop genre. Twennynine was one of the better bands of the time and enjoyed an R&B hit, "Peanutbutter," from 1979's album Best of Friends. This is the follow-up. For this effort, Tanya Willoughby is added and Skip Anderson takes over the keyboard chores, replacing Don Blackman. Twennynine With Lenny White proves that those worrying about the jazz content here missed out on a lot of intelligent playing. The first track, "Just Right for Me," features a strong vocal from Willoughby, and guitarist Eddie Martinez's fiery guitar leads as well as his rhythm work. The sleek "It's Music, It's Magic" employs the same production values of Quincy Jones's The Dude era and has a great horn chart from Jerry Hey. The cutesy "Kid Stuff" is a little too silly, but honestly, this incarnation of the band certainly could get away with it. Although the group's dance credentials were strong, Twennynine Featuring Lenny White proves they also were adept at ballads. The jaunty "Love and Be Loved," written by Anderson, has the right idiosyncratic touch. The most emotional track of the album, "Back to You" has a great string and horn arrangement from Jorge Del Barrio and it certainly was strong enough to be a single if not a hit. Twennynine With Lenny White, produced by White and the underrated Larry Dunn, spotlights a charismatic and fun band and the effort is one of the strongest of the type.

This talented group was seen as more of a dance act then the multifaceted, bright pop/R&B/jazz unit it truly was. For this effort, Twennynine added three new members, but the group's intricate balance and chemistry was affected. Rhythm guitarist Steve Horton was added, as well as two vocalists, including Carla Vaughan and the appealing Tanya Willoghby. Also by this point, commercial considerations were looming, so Just Like Dreaming takes few risks and yields a meager payoff. That's not to say this is all bad – it's not. The potent "Twennynine (The Rap)," an early instance of rap being incorporated into R&B, gives all of the players solo space, especially Horton, who does a great Nile Rodgers-style locking groove on it. "Movin On" itself is reminiscent of '80s-era Chic and has nice interplay from bassist Barry "Sonjohn" Johnson and drummer White. Despite the deft mix of styles, the best of Just Like Dreamin' sticks close to what made Twennynine Featuring Lenny White work. The title track is an effervescent, quirky ballad that sounds like it leapt from the album that came before it. The jaunty "Need You" sounds like bright L.A. pop, well executed and no doubt hated by jazz purists. Nearing the end of this, Just Like Dreamin' seems to be too polished and mainstreamed for its own good. "All Over Again" and "Find a Love," while skilled, sound no different from what other like-minded players where doing at the time. Despite its high points, Just Like Dreamin' wastes the enviable talents of those involved.
