VA - Classic 80's Groove Mastercuts Volume 2 (1995)

Originally released in 1995 this was the twenty-sixth release from the original Beechwood owned 'Mastercuts' team, and features 12 records chosen by Lindsay Wesker - previously a noted writer and contributor to 'Black Echoes' magazine.
As Wesker writes in the liner notes accompanying the release, during the 1980's black music "became big business", interest in black music increased hugely and this had an impact of the quality and quantity of music being produced. Furthermore, and perhaps most significantly, as the decade passed changes in the relative cost and availablity of music technology meant that music was no longer confined (for good and ill) to professional musicians, and (correspondingly) the relative impact of the DJ and DJ culture saw black music mutate and change into the myriad forms which can be heard today.
So here we have a relatively broad selection of music which manages to showcase some of the changes mentioned above. Earth, Wind & Fire's 'Lets' Groove' (1981) is an obvious link to the earlier disco and funk of the 1970's, and it sits alongside Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's 'I Wonder If I Take You Home' (1984) - itself a testimony to the popularity of Electro-Funk and Freestyle. This interest in new musical forms is evident in the Maze track 'Twilight' (originally a B side) - which saw the soul balladeers / funksters producing an almost ethereal soft synth instrumental track unlike anything they had recorded previously.
The collection concentrates on the early to mid 1980's, the latest track (1987) being the Lilo Thomas sung 'I'm In Love', and features predominantly American artists, which (whilst largely expected) ignores the fact that the UK was making music of equal merit - if not on the same scale.
Overall this is a collection which sits very well within the 'Mastercuts' series, it builds nicely on 'Volume 1' and manages to eschew the obvious tracks (which can be found on numerous collections) to include some lesser known tracks which are deserving of your attention. As was to be expected of the original 'Mastercuts' series, unless indicated all of the tracks are the full original 12" mixes - and all have been remastered to the usual high standard. The title was originally issued as a single cd and as a double vinyl album - which can still be found with a little searching and patience!
Overall I warmly recommend this collection to you, it manages to showcase tracks usually left out of such collections as well as one or two 'popular' hits. Nicely balanced and obviously well thought out.
On a final (and separate) note, please be assured that this title can be found (at least in the UK) in a number of quality specialist black music stores relatively easily - and for far less than some of the prices being asked by some unscrupulous sellers. Make the effort - you musical senses will be rewarded.
