Recorded live in April 2013 at the Royal Opera House in London, Sony Classical is proud to present Verdi: Nabucco starring the legendary Placido Domingo in his debut in the title role. Conducted by Nicola Luisotti, the release celebrates the bicentenary year of Verdi’s birth.
With fifty years of stage experience, flourishing in a second career as a baritone, Domingo takes on the role of the Babylonian king with undiminished energy and charisma. “Domingo fills the space with ease, and his baritone timbre has much of the old tenor burnish,” wrote The Independent, praising the expressive beauty of his singing. And the Financial Times wrote “Domingo exudes grandeur and authority, taking command of the role.”
Nabucco was directed by Daniele Abbado, who took the opera’s theme of the enslavement of the Jewish people as a cue to give the opera a 20th-century setting. Conducted expertly by Nicola Luisotti, an experienced master of Verdi’s music, Nabucco also stars Liudmyla Monastyrska, Andrea Care, Marianna Pizzolato and Vitalij Kowaljow.
