James Levine's is a more recent entry in the realm of Dutchman recordings, and sonically the recording is absolutely stunning, with great attention having been paid to the recording process. The casting for this Metropolitan Opera effort is also uniformly first rate, even in the less grateful roles of the hapless Erik, sung by the impressive Ben Heppner, and the scolding nurse, Mary, sung by Birgitta Svendén. Morris's brooding Dutchman is hard to match on any other available recording, and Deborah Voigt is a ravishing Senta. The chorus work is quite good, though not quite as rich as that heard in the Solti/Chicago recording. Overall, Levine does a workmanlike job of conducting these impressive forces, though there are passages in which his tempi seem to drag. This recording is a must for anyone who needs a completely up to date version of Wagner's first major opera.Review by Christian C. Rix
This recording received mixed reviews when it was first released-tempi too slow in places for many, and there was a definite critical bias in the UK against James Morris in all his Wagner roles.
Time has hopefully mellowed some views, for I am happy to assert that at under £8 on amazon this set gets absolute top "Best Buy" recommendation against ALL comers and deserves to be heard by all who love this work. The recording is superb, and atmospheric acoustics are used to great effect without going over the top. The playing of the Met Orchestra-arguably the finest orchestra in the USA and one of the 3 great opera orchestras (Vienna& Dresden before you ask!)is superb, as it is in all Levine's Wagner recordings-the sheer weight of beautiful sound is a delight in itself. Yes, Levine's tempi are slower than many-but to absolutely superb effect, as he makes this a monumental work, a brooding Nordic drama of epic proportions. The point is that the shaping of the music is SO important, and Levine gets it right at every turn. I was surprised how much this work in Levine's hands reminds me of the later works, Ring and Tristan. The Overture is transformed into a tone poem in its own right in this reading, reminiscent of the epic weight and grandeur of Knappertsbusch-but with tauter rhythms (not difficult!). If Solti's reading appeals to you (I think it is awful-raucous playing, breathless tempi and a very poor Senta-even Norman Bailey sound uncomfortable), then this is the diametric opposite and will either not be to your taste or will provide a startling contrast! Vocally, there are NO weak links. I've never understood the the "sniffiness" about Morris's Wagner in the UK-he may at times be a tad understated, but in his prime, as he was for this recording, his voice was the ideal Wagner Bass Baritone, with an effortless legato and ringing upper register-I'll take him any day in preference to Tomlinson and Hotter's ragged vocal efforts, no matter how much more they emoted! Here, Morris is superb in every respect, matched (surpassed in fact) only by van Dam for Karajan on his deeply flawed but unmissable set. Rootering is a rounded humane and jovial Daland, Voight a beautifully powered accurate Senta ( still getting across that she is nuts!), Heppner absolute luxury as Erik-and we even have the marvellous Brigitta Svenden as Mary, more luxury. I cannot fail to mention Paul Groves mellifluous Steuerman-just perfect. There are many fine recordings of this work-the Keilberth is in "historic" sound and Klemperer, Dorati, Dohnanyi, Bohm and Nelsson among others all have fine points as well as many flaws.The Karajan is deeply flawed, but still magnificent, I find the Solti unlistenable-really Sinopoli is the only rival-and at a cost! I can genuinely find no serious (or ANY!) drawbacks with this magnificenent achievement, which transforms this short prelude to the "main meat" of Wagner opera and musicdrama into a towering epic in a way I have not euxperienced before-and I ,for one , love it! The lack of a libretto can be easily overcome. 5 stars at any price-at this price 50 stars. Addendum May 2013. The release of the Konwitschny recording on Brilliant Classics has superseded this recommendation , for while my admiration for this set is undiminished, my admiration for the Konwitschny knows no bounds- and it's really cheap!!Review by D.
