Apart from his popular Canciones negras, written more than half a century ago, the compositions of the now 87-year-old Montsalvatge (in 1999) have made little impact on the musical public in general: many of his works remain unrecorded – the opera Puss in Boots, the Indian Quartet, the five Invocaciones al Crucificado and the virtuoso Harpsichord Concerto, to name only four. But there are two Montsalvatges – one with a more traditional manner, and a later more trenchant, experimental and individual. From his earlier period comes the Sinfonia Mediterranea, composed three years after the Canciones negras; its lack of fashionable ‘modernity’ tempted him at one time to consider rejecting it completely. I’m glad he didn’t, for it’s an attractive (if slightly overlong), warmly romantic work that includes melodies of a popular cast.
Very different in style and technique is Laberinto of 23 years later, which employs a modified dodecaphonic system (with two tone-rows) and whose three movements were inspired by aspects of the Minotaur legend – the frustrating corridors sans issue of the labyrinth, the personalities of Theseus (rugged, depicted on wind) and Ariadne (soft and melting, on strings), and the Minotaur itself (whose bovine nature leads Montsalvatge initially to adopt the rhythm of the Spanish zapateado).
Sortilegis (‘Enchantments’), 20 years further on again, was written for a conductors’ competition and designed to test both technique and artistic perception: on present evidence the enterprising Adrian Leaper (already at that time with six years with the Halle behind him) could have been an ideal entrant. The remaining, and most recent, work, Folia Daliniana, a sinfonia concertante for four wind instruments who exhibit their prowess one by one in turn, is said to be based on the famous Folies d’Espagne theme; if so, the influence of Dali has left the theme so distorted that I failed to recognize it, even while enjoying the work itself and the virtuosity of its performers. A disc well made by musicians and recording engineers alike, which valuably adds to our knowledge of this doyen of Catalan composers.Review by Lionel Salter, Gramophone [8/1999]
