After his solo albums “Dance of the Underclass” and “In The Backstreets of Paradiese”, the long out of print album “Saturday Johnny & Jimmy The Rat” is finally released.

After his folk-punk era with Roaring Jack and his solo albums, still at home in Australia, Alistair Hulett wanted to express his connection to the rich traditional music of Britain and Ireland.

He asked Dave Swabrick about this - and the result of this collaboration published in 1996 is really impressive.

Alistair's singing and Dave's violin breathe life into the songs and inspire the audience: Folk in the best sense - for dancing and quiet listening and of course very political!

This album contains one of my favourite songs of all time. "The Yellow Bittern". The eighteenth century poet Cathal Buidhe, who describes himself as "a sot" finds a yellow bittern that has died of thirst and fears that he might suffer a similar fate. This is an album that would not appeal to what I have called "The ploughboy tendency" - those people who can sing songs about merry ploughboys without thinking about what life was actually like for these merry lads. Political stuff, in other words, about oppressed workers in Scotland and Australia. Fine singing by Alistair Hulett with Dave Swarbrick's fiddle giving the songs, whatever their theme, a lilt and lift to the spirits.
