Veteran string quartet Brooklyn Rider presents a diverse collection of recent works composed for the intrepid ensemble. Rooted in New York City's artistic firmament, this sonically diverse album features works by Battles veteran Tyondai Braxton, Brooklyn Rider's Colin Jacobsen, Bang On A Can's Evan Ziporyn, electro-acoustic composer Paula Matthusen and Kyle Sanna. Influences include Bach, Cage, Zorn, Xenakis, the Lounge Lizards, Minor White, the life force Qi, and the enigmatic sounds of an ancient Roman cistern.Tracklist:
Written specially for string quartet Brooklyn Rider, the music on this recording is exhilarating. Starting with the frenetic minimalism of Tyondai Braxton and a piece by Brooklyn Rider’s second violinist Colin Jacobsen that recalls the worlds of John Cage and Alban Berg, the album moves to the distorting landscapes of Paula Matthusen. It ends with Kyle Sanna’s arresting tribute to photographer Minor White, a haunting suite of contrasting movements, linked as if memories in a photo album. Brooklyn Rider play with blazing confidence and skill.
