“See that old guy there!” says one pointing at me. “He played with Soft Machine and Gong and played with Jimmi Hendrix. And you know what? He's got a 20 year old girlfriend!” They grinned broadly and high fived. “Yeah man he's my mentor.” from Daevid's web site.
I'll spare you the potted biography, if you're really interested you can look him up on the web (or buy the books: Gong Dreaming 1 & 2).
Following on from my previous posting of the Bananamoon Obscura series (well, some of 'em, anyway) I realised that most of the more-mainstream stuff by Bert Camembert isn't here on Avaxhome either. So…

OK: I lied… this isn't an album, it's a single. But it's getting late, OK? And the title wouldn't be so catchy if I called it 14 things, some of which are albums and some singles. I'm rambling now aren't I?
Anyroadup…
A single from 1983 featuring a reggae take on Time of the Bananamoon, plus 3 tracks more in line with what we'd expect from Daevid in the early eighties. The line-up was The Bergerettes, Sonia Pottinger, Mark Williamson, Ralph Carney and Mark Kramer.
tracklist
01 Bananareggae
02 Are You Ready?
03 Oo La La
04 Side Windo
The Divided Alien's first album. As you can see from the cover, he managed to gather quite an impressive posse of late 60s musos for what sounds like a real party. They're all obviously having a proper giggle while recording this. Perhaps a tad heavier than most of Daevid's later work in places, but most of the trademarks are already in there. Groovy baby!

"Not what you think!" Indeed.
Out-takes and studio run-throughs of stuff from the early Gong days. Strictly for collectors, but there's some great stuff in there. Released by the Gong Appreciation Society. Some of these tracks didn't appear until much later.

It's 1982, Dingo Virgin is an angry hippy. He spat this into the microphone. Brilliant! The title track dates back to the late 60s - see "Gong Dreaming vol 1" for the lowdown.

A GAS release from the mid 90s (oo-er missus!). If you caught the man on one of his solo gigs around this time you'll recognise quite a few of these numbers. Pared down to voice and guitar. Graham Clark offers solid and inventive support throughout with exquisite violin playing and some spot-on electric guitar leads. New York Gong drummer Bill Bacon pops up on one track and erstwhile Invisible Opera member Tim Hall takes a guest vocal spot. Daevid, who also produced the album, is on top form, wearing is heart on his sleeve while leading us all on a memorable journey suffused with drama, humour, and above all hope. from Planetgong.co.uk.

Ah yes… this is it folks. Another one from 1982 which, according to Whomp at Discogs, is "one of the best examples of looped (tape) "samples" (yeah, I know Eno was doing this in 'My Life in the Bush of Ghosts' with David Byrne) but the way he used 1 and 2 bar loops as a basis to play over was still revolutionary at the time. An overlooked founding father of modern dance music."

Released in the early 90s by some weird French label if I remember right. This is kinda the evil twin of Camembert Eclectique. Rather than out-takes though, we have demos from The Bananamoon Band - a short-lived project of Daevid's that existed between Soft Machine and Gong. Interesting to see "My Mother's Gone To India" has been around for SO long. Demo qualiy (late 60s demo quality!) so for the bravest only. Nice to hear an early rendition of "Why Are We Sleeping?" though.

"Mantric/grungy psychedelic guitar-based US band.
Daevid's first U.S.A.-based band since New York Gong. He has gathered around himself a group of musicians eager to push the boundaries and jam albums into being in a quite stunning manner. The result is that Money Doesn't Make It is a jewel in the New York Gong styled crown, the truculent teenager of the Gong family, all wild psychedelic guitar, attitude and jive talk; a great CD." from Planetgong.co.uk

1979's release was a radical departure from previous efforts. Here is Dingo Virgin's sideways step away from the hippy vibe of "Good Morning" and "Now Is The Happiest…" and a lurch towards his experimentation period with the cut-up style of "Death Of Rock" etc. It kinda falls somewhere between the 2 extremes, but it has it's moments.

Ha ha! "If you wanna be a nuclear power, why don't you drop it on ze Eiffel Tower?"
Released in 1995, although I suspect the tracks were recorded some time earlier. Track 3 is the Inner City Unit number from their glorious album "Passout" - albeit a much more laid back version (it's not exactly difficult to be more laid back than those nutters, is it now?). Sting from The Police provides high-pitched vocals, aided and abbetted by Nik Turner himself on backing vox and sax. Mentioned in despatches: Russel Hibbs, Harry Williamson, Steve Hillage, Mike Howlett.

Well, you're obviously all far too polite to point-out my mistake. Like I said: it was late when I typed my original post and I didn't realise I'd missed out one of the albums (!) So here it is folks…
Daevid is joined by Mark Robson and Graham Clark for a cool concert of all yer faves. Recorded in Manchester at the beginning of the nineties, it has some great renditions of "Why Do We Treat Ourselves Like We Do?" "Have You Seen My Friend?" and "Trial By Headline".
Check it out.
