This might be my favorite of all of the Hopkinson Smith lute/guitar/theorbo CDs. Track One starts with six seconds of silence to set the mood. Smith then eases into the music with a soft three note passage, and off you go as once again the music seens to play itself in the hands of the master Hopkinson Smith. The CD was one of his earlier efforts, making this accomplishment all the more remarkable-he arrived on the scene as a member of the Studio de Fruhen Music (Early Music Enemble,) lead by Thomas Binkley in 1970 and recorded with them until 1975. Only two years later, he arrived fully ready to tackle the solo lute repertory with a sensitivity, technique, sound, and authenticity never heard before or since (and he started as a rock guitarist, apparently.) I have listened to this CD through all sorts of systems, from a low-fi car system to the Stax Omegas Electrostatic Ear Speakers with their own dual mono tube amplifier, and the music is always stunning.
It is a must have CD for any music lover.
