Altoist Frank Strozier's first session as a leader has been reissued on this Vee Jay CD with the original six selections joined by five additional and previously unreleased performances, only one of which is actually an alternate take. The altoist's quintet consists of Miles Davis' rhythm section of the time (pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb), along with the late, great trumpeter Booker Little. The music, mostly comprised of Strozier originals, is advanced hard bop, and the music is both enjoyable and (due to Little's presence) somewhat historic.

Recorded in New York, New York on December 9, 1959 and in Chicago, Illinois on February 2, 1960. Includes liner notes by Sid Lazard and Joel Forrester. Memphis-bred alto saxophonist Frank Strozier is a superb player in the style of Jackie McLean–like McLean, Strozier has a blues-drenched, hard-edged tone, a mercurial sound, and a thoughtful willingness to push at the boundaries of traditional hard-bop conventions. Yet he's no McLean knock-off–Strozier predated the edgy McLean era by 10 years. FANTASTIC is a reissue (plus several unreleased tracks) of a 1960 session featuring Miles Davis' rhythm section of that time plus the great legendary trumpeter Booker Little. Little had a forward-looking view of jazz, and a brisk, crackling tone that worked splendidly in tandem with Strozier. The tunes here are mostly originals, a mix of mellow ballads and demonically fast swingers. The rest of the band is, as one might expect, crisp, tight, and above all, inspired–there's no coasting here. For those smitten with alto madness, FANTASTIC more than lives up to its title.
