Vol. I - Prologue

The first in a series of videos Gould made with interviewer Bruno Monsaingeon it highlights the diversity of Gould's genius and also shares, through interviews with performers who worked with Gould, bits of his personality and method of working. With pieces ranging in scope from fugues to rhapsodies and symphonies this collection highlights Gould's passion for not only the music he chose to record but also the genre's and composers as well. Admittedly Gould can be a bit technical in his discussions of form, but this does not take away from the film's overall appeal…the music itself. A must for any Gould fan, scholar or enthusiast and a delight for those interested in the insights and work of a pure genius. Highly recommended to anyone who loves piano music as well as classical history in general.

Vol. IX - Mostly Strauss

Here we see this Canadian pianist and composer from television excerpts, interviewed by Humphrey Burton (from 1966), and playing the music he says he is addicted to, the way most people are addicted to chocolate sundaes, the music of Richard Strauss. The first Strauss piece performed (from 1962) is a short song, "Cacilie", using a poem by Heinrich Hart, and sung by soprano Lois Marshall, with Gould as accompanist, but the meat of this tape is the "Burleske fur Pianoforte und Orchester" (from 1967), which is a fascinating mixture of the modern and romantic as Strauss so often managed in his compositions, and this is a truly gorgeous rendition of it, with Gould backed by the Toronto Symphony with Vladimir Golschman conducting. In the middle is Gould's "a la baroque" performance of Mozart's Piano Sonata K. 333, from 1966, and always a pleasure to hear, and of course includes Gould's idiosyncrasies, which are singing/humming along with the music, and his specially made chair, placing him very low to the piano keys.

Vol. XIII - Goldberg Variations (1981)

Taped in 1981, this is essentially a video record of Gould in the recording studio, re-recording the work that launched his international career. Monsaingeon shoots each of the thirty variations from a different angle, thereby creating a visual counterpart borne out of the music's architecture. More tellingly, the camera reveals the sheer joy and concentration exuded by a great performer at the peak of his powers. Pianophiles will be able to scrutinize Gould's idiosyncratic physical approach to piano playing in greater detail here than in other Gould videos. While his gesticulation may have grown more exaggerated over the years, he maneuvers his way through the treacherous cross-handed variations with the utmost of physical economy. Interestingly, Gould claimed that he never used the sustain pedal in Bach, yet there's his right foot pumping away, albeit discreetly.

Note: I added two new rips of Part IX & X sourced from German TV. The audio is better (especially in part X) but the dialogue portion is dubbed in German so I included the old english audio as well.

Thanks to the original ripper.
