The Grandmothers of Inventions are an opportunity for FZ fans to dive back into a memorable past that alas will never return. This live double in Bremen features a slightly different lineup from the one I witnessed in Florence in 2004 in which not only Don Preston excelled, but also Napoleon M. Brock and Roy Estrada (before the latter ran into serious legal problems in USA: bad story!). In this double CD appears again Don Preston who acts as Pygmalion of the group and Bunk Gardner (saxophonist and flutist of the first hour). The other elements are different from the previous ones of 2004, but no less for the technique of execution. The first CD stands out for "Pound for a Brown" and "I'm the Slime where Don Preston, Bunk Gardner and the rhythm section are very effective.

However of the two CDs without doubt the second is more interesting with an" Uncle Meat "with a pretty good drum solo, and a masterful Bunk Gardner considering his advanced age. A version in which a good hint of unexpected Dupree's Paradise fits in. The sequel is a long Meedle in which a very compelling Don Preston on electric keyboards emerges and Experimental Trouble Every Day a textbook piece like in the CD "At the Gewandhaus", characterized by psychedelic atmospheres in which Max Kuttner's guitar and Don Preston's keyboards and Chris Garcia's drums are intertwined, worthy of an old-fashioned Arthur Tripp : a piece that recalls the atmosphere of the first Mothers of Invention. Don Preston does not miss the appointment with Trouble Every Day as already done previously (he seems to give his best in this piece revisited decades after or the original) with a memorable synthesizer virtuosity (iPhone). It all ends with "Montana" and an unreleased track "Stratus" or rather a really beautiful version of Apostrophe. Unfortunately Montana is not the best piece at least in the sung part (sic!), But Kuttner's guitar represents the best side. In short, a double that an FZ lover must absolutely have, to become more and more aware of the vitality of those who are still alive of the glorious Mothers of Invention!
