I must admit I winced when I read the label information, especially the bit about "The Enchanted Melody From The Shirley Temple Show". My fears were virtually groundless, however. This is a good big band, with plenty of soloists, and an arranger (Harry Betts, late of the Kenton trombone section) who treats these television and film themes with praiseworthy perfunctoriness. After a brief nod in the direction of the 'theme' composer, we are plunged into a series of exciting passages by men such as Bud Shank, Bill Perkins, Jack Sheldon, Frank Rosolino, Russ Freeman and (and this will surprise some readers) Herbie Steward. Steward was one of the original "Four Brothers" of the 1947 Woody Herman band, but, unlike his fellows (Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and the late Serge Chaloff) he has been reluctant to take a prominent part in jazz since the late forties. He has a distinctive tenor tone and creates a subtle aura with his solos which none of the other "brothers" achieve. Bud Shank is responsible for some of the most exhilarating passages and his solos on "Evan's Theme" (from Hong Kong) and "Cain's Hundred" show that his alto style has undergone the kind of change which affected Art Pepper's playing shortly before the latter's incarceration. I have always admired Jack Sheldon's work, and it's good to hear his cloudy-toned solos on "Joanna" and, more particularly, on "Theme From Bus stop" where he is featured prominently in a well-shaded arrangement. ~ Alun Morgan
