Classical / Contemporary Classical / Chamber Music / Strings

Scottish composer James MacMillan is known for big public works, some of them inspired by his Catholic faith. But he is also the composer of a good deal of chamber music, largely avoiding the Scottish traditional influences present in his other work. Some is more abstract than his choral and orchestral pieces, although the String Quartet No. 2 ("Why is this night different?"), recorded here, is inspired by a Jewish Passover Seder observance. Chronologically that's the middle of the three works on the album; the earliest one, Visions of a November Spring, was one of the pieces that made MacMillan's reputation in the early 1990s, and it introduces the contrasts of light and dark that run through many of his works.

Technically, the highlight here is the String Quartet No. 3 of 2002, one of whose movements is denoted simply by metronome marks, a second by the Italian word "Largo," and the last by the English words "Patiently and painfully slow." Entirely abstract, the quartet has a kind of ecstasy. The finale fades away into the ambient noise of Suffolk's Potton Hall, and you'll need a decent set of equipment to hear all the notes; this is not music to listen to on a computer or car stereo. The Royal String Quartet has an English-sounding name, but the group comes from Poland, a country without a monarch. No matter: their work in this gripping finale is flawless. For MacMillan fans, this recording presents a remarkable side of the composer, of which they may well be only marginally aware.
