Music from the Court of King Janus at Nicosia (1374-1432) - Huelgas Ensemble - Paul van Nevel

Recorded at the Chapel of Abdij Marienlof, Belgium, June 16-18 1993

The French rule of Cyprus, the island of Aphrodite, lasted from 1192-1489 and produced a blossoming of courtly culture and music. A unique manuscript, written between 1413 and 1426 at the court of king Janus I de Lusignan, bears witness to the remarkable musical achievements. Though the influence of Ars Subtilior cannot be denied, additional elements emphasize in word and tone the island's peculiarities and mannerisms - the extremely complex rhythms for one thing.
