Piano music occupies an important place within the oeuvre of Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996). His first publicly performed piece was a work for the piano - Lento in Due Mouimenti - and he would continue to compose for the instrument throughout his career. Hence, we can follow the development of his compositional style through his piano music - tracing, for example, the evolution of his personal harmonic language or his increasing timbral consciousness.
Takemitsu first heard Noriko Ogawa perform in Japan in August 1989. He once wrote to her: 'I received a strong impression from your Debussy; I can still recall it'. Takemitsu also said that Noriko Ogawa's sound as a pianist was well suited to his music. The advice he gave her was: 'Sonority and melody are important'; 'Play as if time had gone'. Noriko Ogawa had an unforgettable opportunity to meet Takemitsu for the last time on the occasion of a BBC Radio interview a month before the comnoser's death. Takemitsu strongly emphasized the importance of 'singing new songs'. He explained that he was interested in writing music as a personal gift rather than in response to major commissions - for example, after someone's death (many of his piano pieces reflect this attitude).
