For the last 12 years, ’77 have been bringing the classic rock’n’roll energy from the 70’s back with an unapologetic vengeance. Holding bands like The Stooges, The Who, AC/DC and Black Sabbath in high regard, it’s easy to figure out exactly what this band is all about. Consisting of brothers Armand Valeta on vocals and guitar and LG Valeta on guitar and vocals, Dani Martin on bass and vocals and Andy Cobo on drums; ’77 was initially formed by the brothers in 2006 and named as a tribute to AC/DC’s critically acclaimed album “Let There Be Rock”, which was released in 1977. Now in April of 2018, they’re still going strong with the recent release of their 5th LP called “Bright Gloom”.
Hailing from Barcelona, Spain, ’77 have spent most of November and December of 2017 holed up in Brazil Recording Studio in Madrid with producer Raül Refree to bring us their most nefarious work so far. In comparison to their 2015 release called “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us”, “Bright Gloom” feels like it is on the other end of the sonic spectrum, with intense lyrics and an almost aggressive vibe surrounding many of the songs on “Bright Gloom”. Another change for the band is the arrival of their newest bassist, Dani Martin, replacing Guillem Martinez in 2017, with the release of “Bright Gloom” marking Martin’s first time recording and releasing an album with the band.
In the past, ’77 have made a stalwart point of recording their songs in analogue in order to get their sound as close to the rough, raw and imperfect rock of the 70’s that they love so much; and “Bright Gloom” is no different. If anything, they pushed themselves even harder to employ analogue techniques and gear, with guitarist and vocalist LG Valeta revealing:
“…The difference with the other albums—and I think with almost any album in 2018—is that we mixed it from the 24-track tape onto a 2-track tape with analogue gear such as compressors, EQs, tape delays, and spring and plate reverbs.”
Undoubtedly, music gear enthusiasts and audiophiles alike will appreciate the amount of thought and effort thrown into the production of “Bright Gloom”.
Having just been released on the 27th of April via Century Media, there is no need to wait to give this album a listen; do yourself a favour and get a copy of your own as soon as possible – just like we did here at Overdrive! I’ve taken the time to give everyone a quick run-down of the songs that caught my attention the most:
“Who’s Fighting Who” has what I think is the darkest vibe on this album, and damn does it suit the band so well. Starting slow with a ponderous riff, ’77 successfully convince us that this song isn’t going to go much further, before slapping us with a tempo change and a bluesy, tube-amp guitar solo, making us all out to be fools.
“Be Crucified” has a heavier and grungier mood, with their stop-start intro merging into a cool, calm and collected sounding dark rock’n’roll verse and chorus. This song is really rounded out by the screaming guitar solo that almost devolves into overdriven white noise in the best way possible courtesy of LG.
Taking us in a slightly different direction, “Where Have They Gone” brings a tom-heavy drumming intro, leading into a verse that may just be the most uplifting sounding moment on “Bright Gloom”. This song has less of an intense feel, instead aiming for a more relaxed tempo and music. That is, of course, until the solo hits.
“Last Chance” has an old country rock feel during the intro, building slowly into a real rocker of a track full of hard-driving riffage interspersed with little bluesy guitar parts, backed by a consistent and simple but powerful bassline throughout.
“I Want My Money Back” opens with a simple drum and guitar part, joined by Valeta on Vocals. The contrast in this song between the hard intensity of the pre-chorus and chorus and the minimalistic easiness of the verses is a pleasure to listen to, especially considering how well they pulled off the two aspects of the song.
Finally, “Make Up Your Mind” heralds in the end of the album with spirited and fun feeling prevailing in this song. You can hear each band member having the time of their lives, a quality I favour in live analogue recordings that is often missed when recording digitally. Despite only being 1 minute and 52 seconds long, this song feels like it’s got a whole lot more crammed into it than that.
I had a fantastic time listening all the way through ‘77’s “Bright Gloom”, and I can’t wait to do it again. For me personally, my appreciation for the way that they recorded, mixed and mastered trumps everything else about “Bright Gloom”. The Valeta brothers’ guitar tone had unparalleled warmth and full-bodied overdrive that brought their riffs and solos to life, while Martin’s bass tone had its own distinct character that demanded attention in every song. Cobo’s drumming was crystal clear and full of power, while Valeta’s vocals were strong and reliable throughout. ’77 have truly taken a big step forward with their sound, bringing even more energy and muscle into their music than ever before. “Bright Gloom” has earned itself a rating of 71/100, have a listen today to see for yourself!~ overdrive-mag.com
